Packaging help wanted

At the time of writing, Glide is missing from almost all package repositories, that should change.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Since the nixpkgs PR will not be merged in the near future, it would be great to set up a binary cache so that Glide can be installed by Nix users.

Do you have any recommendations for how to best setup a binary cache for nix? I'm unfamiliar with that aspect of nix.

At first glance it looks like cachix might work well but I suspect glide would blow past the 5GB free limit for open source repos.

I'm not particularly familiar with setting up caches myself, sorry! But yeah the limit is clearly too small.

It would be nice to have a list of package repos you would like glide to be added to.

Not a repo per-se, but I think it'd be helpful to provide an AppImage?

I also haven't looked into what it'd take to get apt install glide-browser, or some derivation of that, working.

Just created flake for personal usage. If anyone needs it, you can use https://github.com/aca/glide-browser.nix

nix --extra-experimental-features "nix-command flakes" run github:aca/glide-browser.nix

Was using this myself, but realized it wasn't up-to-date, so I updated it and added several improvements to bring it more in line with the -bin style browser packages in nixpkgs. Since I only use x86_64-linux, I simplified it to that, but it should be easy enough to update for other architectures or darwin(I just have no personal interest in supporting them, sorry!)

Package source is https://git.pyrox.dev/pyrox/nix/src/branch/main/packages/glide-browser-bin/package.nix, feel free to copy it, I'm officially releasing it under MIT instead of the MPL-2.0 license the rest of my nix config is licensed as(will add a license header confirming this)

Also: once glide-browser is in nixpkgs, I'm going to be one of the principal maintainers since I have a commit bit. Hoping to be able to daily drive this soon(needing to migrate my config lol)

Thanks @pyrox0! FYI you have a typo here: https://git.pyrox.dev/pyrox/nix/src/commit/7eb841d121bc088b1d931e73678a7d97524cc2e9/packages/glide-browser-bin/package.nix#L81, glide-brower.png instead of glide-browser.png.

So there can be a more official path for nix users until glide is in nixpkgs, I've created https://github.com/glide-browser/glide.nix which is mostly based off of pyrox's package with a flake included as well. I haven't tested it super thoroughly yet, so any suggestions for improvements / fixes are more than welcome. I'd also be happy to give either of you commit privileges if you'd like :)

Hi, would you be interested in maintaining a Scoop bucket for Windows users? It's pretty easy to create one based on the upstream official Firefox app JSON. Similar to glide.nix, I expect this would probably live as another repo under the glide-browser org.

I created https://github.com/ian-h-chamberlain/glide-bucket using the official bucket template, which does automatic updating (pulled from GH releases) so it should in theory be pretty low-maintenance.

If you are interested in making this official, a couple questions that I can think of before it would be ready to transfer/copy to this org:

1. Is glide-browser/glide a good name for it? Matches the app's github slug which I think is nice

2. Similarly, preferences on repo naming? glide-browser/scoop-bucket or something like that maybe would make sense?

3. Would you prefer to try upstreaming to scoop official buckets? This might be a reasonable candidate for the Extras bucket (based on the Main bucket criteria) but keeping it here would allow for faster fixes if you end up changing anything about how the app is packaged/distributed.

   • I am not sure if alpha versions are typically allowed in the main repos, they might prefer to wait until a 1.0 or "non-alpha" version exists.

Let me know if interested, I'll be using this bucket for myself in the meantime but would love to have it as an official way to install!
