For me, it shows the mode indicator as expected

With vertical tabs enabled, check whether Glide current mode appears in the list of available toolbar items in Customize Toolbar page. If it does, drag it to the toolbar.

The mode indicator is not shown by default with a fresh configuration (after removing ~/.config/glide and keeping only ~/.config/glide/glide.ts) when:

glide.prefs.set("sidebar.verticalTabs", true);

It appears after manually adding it from the Customize Toolbar page.
