BUILDING SWL
Under Unix:
NOTE: SWL may not build properly using the "make" utilities
supplied by some vendors. It is known to build properly using GNU
make. SGI's pmake is known not to work.
Chez Scheme Version 6.0 (or later) must be installed and your path
should include the executable shell script, scheme, that invokes
Chez Scheme.
Your must have a C compiler to build the swl shared library (swl.so
or swl.sl). Any ANSI C compiler should work. Edit configure.ss if
necessary to adjust the method for using your C compiler and linker
to build object files and shared libraries.
If you do not have a C compiler, it is possible to use the shared
library shipped with the binary release, although it will be
necessary to edit src/swl/Makefile to remove dependencies on the
object files used to create the library.
Tcl/Tk 8.3.2 (or later) must be installed on your machine, and it
must have been configured to build and install shared libraries
(libtcl8.0.so and libtk8.0.so) using the --enable-shared option to
configure (see {tcl8.3.2,tk8.3.2}/unix/README). If you've
installed Tcl/Tk anywhere but the default locations, edit
configure.ss to reflect the locations of the Tcl/Tk run-time
library files (those with .tcl extension), and the Tcl/Tk include
directory.
Once all of this has been set up properly, build the system by
typing "make" in the top-level directory.
Test SWL by running the shell script, "./swl".
To install SWL, edit the destination directories in Mf-install if
necessary and run "make install".
If the linker has trouble finding the Tcl/Tk libraries, you may need
to change the SHLIBS variable setting for your machine type in
configure.ss.
Under Windows:
Chez Scheme Version 6.0 (or later) must be installed and your path
should include the batch file, scheme.bat, that invokes Chez
Scheme.
Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 (or later) must also be installed on your
machine to build the sll dynamic link library (swl.dll), with the
directory containing its binaries (including cl, and nmake) in your
path.
If you do not have a C compiler, it is possible to use the dll file
shipped with the binary release, although it will be necessary to
edit src/swl/Makefile.vc to remove dependencies on the object files
used to create the library.
Tcl/Tk 8.3.2 (or later) must be installed on your machine. If
you've installed Tcl/Tk anywhere but the default locations, edit
configure.ss to reflect the locations of the Tcl/Tk run-time
library files (those with .tcl extension), the Tcl/Tk .lib files
(e.g., tcl80.lib and tk80.lib), the Tcl/Tk .dll files (e.g.,
tcl80.dll and tk80.dll) and the Tcl/Tk include directory.
Once all of this has been set up properly, build the system by typing
"nmake -f Makefile.vc" in the top-level directory.
Test SWL by running the batch file, "swl.bat".
See README for more information.
