Multiplayer skyblock is broken

I'm playing on a self-setup server with my friend, and i set the spawn protection to 0, however i just instantly freefall above my island and am then teleported back to my spawn and everything is screwed up. Please help.

It just keeps saying i can't be that far away or spawn at that island.
