📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The AST now stores direct function maps, node IDs, and external comments. Optimization uses ordered AstOptimizationKind values with in-place mutation. Pattern phase selectors were removed. Rendering and CLI, GUI, TUI, and decompiler integrations use the updated APIs.

Changes

AST and optimization pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
AST storage and node contracts
fireball/src/abstract_syntax_tree/objects/*, fireball/src/utils/*
Function versioning was removed. Ast stores direct functions and comments. Wrapped<T> uses generated AstNodeId values.
Optimization API and passes
fireball/src/abstract_syntax_tree/optimization*
Optimization configuration was replaced by AstOptimizationKind lists, nested loops, and in-place optimization passes.
Pattern matching without phases
fireball/src/abstract_syntax_tree/optimize/pattern_matching/*
Phase directives and phase-specific pattern application were removed. Pattern-generated nodes receive fresh IDs.
AST-aware rendering
fireball/src/abstract_syntax_tree/print*, fireball/src/abstract_syntax_tree/traits*
Rendering methods now receive the AST and retrieve comments from the AST comment map.
CLI, GUI, and decompiler integration
dryice/src/*, fireball/src/{elf,macho,pe}/*, firebat/src/*, fireman/src/*
Callers now optimize mutable ASTs. Fireman and Firebat represent optimization settings as ordered optimization-kind vectors. Shared GUI ASTs use Arc<Mutex<Ast>>.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to c0312

This refactor changes preset loading, pattern parsing, AST mutation, and custom-pattern UI behavior, but the current implementation can reject existing presets, panic on generated or invalid patterns, leave partially mutated AST state, and omit the custom-pattern window. The PR is not merge-ready until these concrete compatibility, failure-handling, and integration issues are fixed.

Remove phase directives from generated patterns.

Lines 598, 637, and 680 emit at beforeIrAnalyzation, at afterIrAnalyzation, and at afterOptimization. This PR removes phase selectors from the .fb language. Dryice-generated .fb and .fb.gz files will not parse with the updated pattern parser. Generate phase-free rules and preserve any phase label only as export metadata.

Report an optimization failure instead of panicking.

optimizations can contain PatternMatching entries built from user-supplied .fb files. A pattern parse error returns Err(DecompileError) from Ast::optimize, and .unwrap() turns it into a panic with a backtrace. Line 43 already reports an unreadable script file with eprintln!, so a pattern that parses badly deserves the same treatment.

26-26: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Every optimization pass now panics on an unknown function id. The flat Ast.functions map replaced the versioned lookup, and each pass resolves the function with ast.functions.get_mut(&function_id).unwrap(). Ast::optimize_functions is public and accepts any AstFunctionId slice, so an id that is not present aborts the process. Each pass already returns Result<(), DecompileError>, so the fix is to return an error instead of unwrapping.

  • fireball/src/abstract_syntax_tree/optimize/ir_analyzation.rs#L26-L26: replace the unwrap() with ok_or(...)? and apply the same change to the two later lookups at Line 140 and Line 161.
  • fireball/src/abstract_syntax_tree/optimize/pattern_matching/apply.rs#L61-L61: replace the unwrap() with ok_or(...)? and apply the same change to the writeback lookup at Line 72.

Consider validating the ids once in Ast::optimize_functions instead, so each pass can keep a plain lookup.

Propagate invalid pattern errors instead of unwrapping them.

AstPattern::from_file stores file-load failures as AstPatternParsed::ParseError. apply_patterns returns that error, but Ast::optimize_functions calls .unwrap() on the result. A misspelled preset name or missing file can therefore panic. Report the offending preset value when constructing the pattern or propagate the error.

Generate a new ID when cloning a wrapped node.

Update the exporter or restore at parsing. dryice/src/main.rs:598 emits at beforeIrAnalyzation, which now reaches the parser’s unknown-if-directive error. apply_patterns propagates that error, and Ast::optimize_functions unwraps it at fireball/src/abstract_syntax_tree/optimize.rs:84-85, so generated patterns can panic during optimization.

Add the custom pattern window to BoardData.

The semicolon at line 39 discards the BoardWindow, so this branch compiles but does not add the custom window. Later board.connect calls use the missing ID and return without connecting downstream windows.

Renaming the field breaks every stored preset; add serde defaults.

JsonPreset replaces the previous aggregate optimization field with optimizations, and no field carries #[serde(default)]. Serde therefore rejects any preset JSON that does not contain optimizations, which includes every preset written against the old schema.

The failure is not visible as a schema problem:

  • fireman/src/decompile.rs Lines 16-22 catch the error, print it, and fall back to JsonPreset::default(). The user loses print_config and custom_script as well.
  • fireman/src/tui.rs Lines 78-85 discard the error with no message at all.

Add per-field defaults so a partial preset still loads. Note that a plain #[serde(default)] on optimizations produces an empty vector, which means "run no optimization", so use an explicit default function to keep the documented behavior.

♻️ Proposed fix
 #[derive(Serialize, Deserialize)]
 struct JsonPreset {
+    #[serde(default)]
     custom_script: Vec<String>,
+    #[serde(default = "default_optimizations")]

+        .into_iter()
+        .map(JsonPresetOptimizationConfig::from_fireball_optimization)
+        .collect()
+}

JsonPreset::default can then reuse default_optimizations(), and JsonPresetPrintConfig needs Default, which it already has at Lines 271-275.

Surface the failure when a custom script cannot be read.

Err(_) => {} drops the error. The requested --script file is then ignored with no indication in the TUI. fireman/src/decompile.rs Line 43 reports the same condition to the user.

Do not use eprintln! here, because the alternate screen is active. Record the message in the app state, or emit it through the logging facility so the user learns the script was skipped.
