Sport Consultants Australia (SCA) works with community, state and national sporting organisations, community business groups, tourism associations, and event organisers on strategy, governance and funding. Mike Rennie joined the practice in 2019 and took ownership as managing partner in 2020.
Member-based organisations run on volunteer labour while handling real money and carrying real liability. Most know what they want to do and cannot say what is stopping them, and the blocker is usually structural. Committees turn over every year or two, while what actually holds the place together between elections is two or three long-serving people who have absorbed everything nobody ever wrote down. A structure that works spreads that load, survives a change of committee, and puts decisions on documented policy — so when something contentious comes up, the answer is a rule rather than a personality.
Grant applications fail for a related reason. A funding body is not assessing whether an applicant's project is worthwhile; it is assessing whether that project delivers the outcome the programme was created to buy, and whether the decision will be straightforward to defend.
Nearly all organisations are already doing some things well — local standing, relationships built over decades, and people who have held the place together for years. Reform that fails to identify and capture existing strengths trades a working thing for a tidier one. Our work is to keep what holds and fix what does not: strategic planning and organisational reform, covering constitutions, governance frameworks, committee and board structures and operational policy; grant and tender writing, from small community funding to six-figure state government programmes; and delivery — programme design, communications and campaign material, and participant and member acquisition.
