ci(zagscript): run first-release qualification on native Linux x86-64 - #21
ZagScript Linux x86-64 first-release qualification remains DRAFT / NOT CERTIFIED. The native Ubuntu 24.04 workflow independently checks trusted-bootstrap compiler/daemon fixed point, uploads SHA-256 verified native binaries, and runs four disjoint 101-case gate shards. All four shards and the bootstrap must pass for first-release qualification. An isolated shard is not a release certificate.
This branch includes targeted fixes discovered from the first native Linux shard artifacts:
Install the process_platform.zag sibling of the compiler-owned std:process in relocatable prefixes; the staged installation recipe and assertion now agree.
Reject malformed .zagd.conf in znc promote before any ledger side effects; keep the reversible-ledger enablement gate.
Mark cancellation token/channel adapter parameters with their correct borrow contracts.
Install qemu-user-static on native CI hosts for the cross-architecture resource embedding fixture.
Print an uncaught Script error code on one stderr line, as required by the runtime fixture. Preserve allocation cleanup.
Record the failing assertion line for ZIR authority test failures without relaxing any assertion.
Verified locally: freshly rebuilt macOS ARM64 compiler; run_zagd_config_template.sh PASS; staged installed-layout PASS; portable typed ZIR authority 29/29 plus view authority 28/28. Source-matched Linux x86-64 binaries generated on macOS and executed under x86-64 emulation produced all 21 expected ZIR exit statuses and the correct uncaught Script diagnostic. Emulated results are not physical-host release proof.
Original source 46e80af workflow run 40383871258 reached native fixed-point compiler success but its first-release shards failed or were incomplete; per-shard logs established the regressions above. Follow-up native runs 40427492559, 40429429586 and 40432284240 are still in progress. The current head is fcb8088; no 101/101 claim is made.
Beyond the first-release gate, master qualification still requires a suitable writable cgroup v2/user-systemd/earlyoom host, i686 authority and fresh 30-run benchmarks. Zag v2 has an independent release gate. This draft is stacked on #20 (and #16).
2026-10-26 follow-up at fcb8088: resource-embedding runtime assertions now identify the executable, expected status, actual status, and runner on failure. The updated macOS embedding test passes, and source-matched x86-64 imported/direct #embed fixtures both exit 42 under emulation. This remains emulator evidence, not physical Linux certification. Native runs 40429429586 (previous head) and 40432284240 (current head) are in progress; no first-release claim is made.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds native Linux release qualification with four sharded checks and an aggregate result. It adds a cross-language benchmark for ZagScript, C, Rust, and Python. It also updates AArch64 code generation and optimization, compiler and standard-library behavior, installation checks, test scripts, and review settings.
The gate accepts suite-range bounds. Four workflow shards verify artifacts and run assigned ranges.
Aggregate release result .github/workflows/zagscript-linux-release.yml
The aggregate job reports bootstrap and shard statuses and requires both to succeed. Its summary states that separate guarded-cgroup, earlyoom, and benchmark checks are not certified by this workflow.
Cross-language benchmark
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Benchmark kernels and runner zag-poc/benchmarks/cross_language/*, zag-poc/benchmarks/run_cross_language.py
New kernels implement the same recurrence in four languages. The runner validates settings and toolchains, verifies each run's output, collects timings, and writes raw results, summary statistics, and metadata.
Benchmark smoke test and instructions zag-poc/benchmarks/test_cross_language.py, zag-poc/benchmarks/README.md
The opt-in test checks invalid settings and validates successful output files. The README describes setup, verification, measurements, and results.
The AArch64 backend adds unsigned high-half multiplication and uses strength reduction for supported constant divisors. Regression tests cover signed and unsigned remainder cases and division by zero.
The optimizer replaces eligible adjacent push/pop pairs with a move or removes them when the registers match. Tests check the simplified output and label boundary behavior.
Cancellation APIs mark token pointers as borrowed and channel pointers as mutable-borrowed. String concatenation marks its inputs borrowed, and the compiler recognizes it as non-retaining.
Compiler calls and diagnostics zag-poc/selfhost/native/zir_native_backend_test.zag, zag-poc/selfhost/native/znc.zag, zag-poc/selfhost/parse.zag
Backend fixture calls pass an additional zero-valued argument. znc_promote validates the source path and project configuration before checking ledger-runtime availability. Uncaught Script errors print the label and code on one line.
Install process platform module zag-poc/Makefile, zag-poc/tests/run_zagscript_install_layout.sh
The install target copies process_platform.zag, and the install-layout test checks for it.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Projection and filesystem test cases zag-poc/selfhost/script_projection_test.zag, zag-poc/tests/raw_fs_syscall_adapter.zag, zag-poc/tests/run_derivation_ledger.sh
The projection test covers an edit inside typed interpolation with a nested map lookup. The filesystem test uses a relative pathname for the invalid-dirfd check, and the ledger test checks the updated conflict message.
Release and script test diagnostics zag-poc/tests/run_resource_embed.sh, zag-poc/tests/run_zagd_core.sh, zag-poc/tests/run_zir_authority.sh, zag-poc/tests/run_script_interpolation_project.sh
Shell checks report unexpected statuses or failure locations. The integration script runs parser, interpolation, and projection tests in sequence.
Daemon lifetime test updates zag-poc/tests/run_zagd_buffer_lifetime.sh
The daemon test specifies a root source, expands startup polling, reports failure details, and stops and resumes the daemon during the stale-record check.

Explanation
The title "ci(zagscript): run first-release qualification on native Linux x86-64" matches the main change. The PR adds a GitHub Actions workflow that runs a bootstrap and four release-gate shards on native Linux x86-64. The title names the scope (zagscript CI), the purpose (first-release qualification), and the platform (native Linux x86-64). The many supporting edits in the changeset (std library signature borrow annotations, aarch64 optimizer changes, benchmarks, test fixes) are secondary to the workflow and are not described in the title, which the criteria allow.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Pin the actions that produce release evidence.
Each @v4 reference can resolve to different action code after its tag moves. Pin checkout, upload-artifact, and download-artifact to reviewed full commit SHAs so a later tag change cannot alter this qualification workflow. Based on learnings, mutable GitHub Actions references should use full commit SHAs. (docs.github.com)
⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Verify the seed against an independent digest.
Line 60 derives the manifest pin from the same znc file that bootstrap.sh later verifies. If that seed changes, both the calculated pin and the verification change with it. The workflow can then report a “trusted seed” without checking its identity against an approved value. Compare seed_sha with a separately approved digest before creating the manifest. Remove the old candidate record before restarting the daemon.
The second polling loop can accept the first daemon’s candidates.record before the second daemon reaches its initial candidate publication. The old .zagd.status still reports state=idle, so both stale conditions can satisfy the loop.
The following suggest command reads semantic.record, not candidates.record. It can pass from the refreshed semantic record without proving that the second daemon published refreshed candidates.
Remove the old candidate record before starting the second daemon.

Test combined interpolation and map projection in the release gate.
run_script_interpolation_project.sh runs only the parser and runtime interpolation tests. The separate projection fixture tests ordinary source edits, insertions, deletions, conflicts, and unchanged input. It contains no interpolated or map expressions. A regression in combined interpolation or map projection can therefore pass both test paths. Add a projection fixture with such an expression and assert the projected result.

The new _zag_str_concat exemption permits return _zag_str_concat(s, "c") when s is an owned allocation. This check treats any mention of s in the return expression as a transfer, but concatenation returns a separate allocation. The input leaks on every call.
Check whether the returned value carries the owner identity, rather than whether the expression mentions it.

Apply the configured build timeout to tool-version commands.
When BUILD_TIMEOUT_SECONDS differs from 180, these calls still use the 180-second default in command_output. A short configured limit can therefore leave the benchmark waiting much longer than requested. Pass build_timeout to each tool-version call. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check the bad-dirfd result against the target file.
The test creates second under root, but passes second relative to the current directory. If an adapter ignores dirfd and that relative file is absent, it can return ENOENT and pass this assertion. The check of root/second does not detect that failure.
Use a controlled relative target that exists, and check for the bad-file-descriptor error. Linux returns EBADF for an invalid directory descriptor. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Propagate the host-native compiler to the projection stage.
When this wrapper runs directly on an ARM host without ZNC, the first two child scripts select zag_native_compiler ., but run_script_projection.sh falls back to ./znc. Resolve the compiler once in this wrapper and export ZNC, or update run_script_projection.sh to use zag_native_compiler too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

fcb8088: resource-embedding runtime assertions now identify the executable, expected status, actual status, and runner on failure. The updated macOS embedding test passes, and source-matched x86-64 imported/direct#embedfixtures both exit 42 under emulation. This remains emulator evidence, not physical Linux certification. Native runs 40429429586 (previous head) and 40432284240 (current head) are in progress; no first-release claim is made.Need help on this PR? Tag
