I didn't know it at the time, but I was fortunate enough to be a part of his final semester. I wasn't the best student, but I always enjoyed Professor Southern's energy, his enthusiasm for seemingly minor details. He somehow transformed something mundane as a garage door, into the peak of computer science, and explained the fundamentals of a Finite State Machine.
As the time of writing though (Fall 2023), I'm currently a TA for this course, CS 2110, which I think is the most I can do to honour his legacy. To spread the knowledge and carry the same vibes he had. Thank you, professor.
