Summary

Expose existing Dynamo routing capabilities to Python hosts through thin OfflineRouter and SessionAffinity bindings. Reuse the existing RadixTree and hash bindings. Native LocalScheduler still performs selection, admission, load accounting and cancellation; native SessionAffinity owns binding, lease and TTL behavior.

The bindings accept native fields and explicit clock advances. They contain no AISim request schema, conversation-tree interpretation, role-specific simulation configuration, lifecycle protocol or reporting. Hosts own that translation and simulation execution. No additional wheel/crate or AISim dependency change is introduced.

Start with lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router.rs (530 lines) and its Python declarations in _core.pyi. The complete PR adds 764 lines including registration, declarations and five boundary tests.

Integration

Merge this API before AISimulate #306, which owns AgentX simulation and acceptance. Dynamo #15240 remains an optional downstream dependency update. Existing #15631/#16490 remain unchanged; no release backport is requested.

Validation

  • Built the default runtime wheel without ais-forward-pass or any AISim pin change.
  • Five installed native-interface tests passed: affinity ownership/TTL, cache-informed selection, native queue release/cancellation, deterministic seeding, and operation with AISim imports blocked.
  • AISim acceptance: 24 full CLI cases plus two adapter lifecycle cases passed without the ai-dynamo plugin.
  • Formatting and repository pre-commit checks passed.

Calls are synchronous and thread-affine. Python transport performance has not been benchmarked.

Part of ai-dynamo/aisimulate#38.

Walkthrough

The Python bindings add dynamo.llm.OfflineRouter, a host-controlled interface to native routing. It processes JSON commands, uses explicit replay time, supports affinity and worker lifecycle updates, and returns placement results and routing evidence.

Changes

OfflineRouter

Layer / File(s) Summary
Public API and command contracts
lib/bindings/python/rust/lib.rs, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm.rs, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/wire.rs, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/mod.rs, lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_core.pyi, lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/llm/__init__.py, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/README.md
The bindings expose OfflineRouter. The implementation adds JSON command, request, observation, and response contracts with configuration and topology validation. The stub and README describe the interface and its constraints.
Replay runtime and scheduler setup
lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/runtime.rs, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/helpers.rs, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/router.rs
The router uses a paused Tokio runtime with explicit time advancement. Replay helpers configure workers and slots, and the router initializes its native scheduler and replay state.
Affinity leases and routing evidence
lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/affinity.rs
Session and sibling-group affinity use staged and active leases. Manual clock updates, dispatch outcomes, and physical KV events update routing evidence.
Placement, lifecycle, and Python integration
lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/mod.rs, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/router.rs, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/offline_router/tests.rs, lib/bindings/python/tests/test_offline_router_policy.py
JSON commands drive placements, observations, dispatch and request lifecycle, and worker topology changes through native scheduler admissions. Rust and Python tests cover affinity, cache reuse, role-specific load, virtual time, and invalid commands.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2c4be

The new OfflineRouter can keep routing to a worker after the host removes it, unless the host marked that worker as draining first. Re-adding that worker afterwards breaks the router handle until it is recreated. The new Python tests also lack required scheduling and timeout markers, so they may not run in pre-merge CI or may fail the marker check. Both issues have small fixes and should be resolved before merge.

Explanation

The description provides substantial scope, implementation details, reviewer guidance, integration context, and validation results. However, it does not include the required "## Related Issues" section or a supported issue reference format. It ends with "Part of ai-dynamo/aisimulate#38", which does not match the repository template.

Resolution

Add a "## Related Issues" section and reference the issue using the required format, such as "Relates to #38" or "Closes #38". Preserve the existing details and validation information unless the issue number requires a repository-qualified reference because it is in another repository.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: The Python test module still declares only unit and gpu_0, so it lacks the required lifecycle marker and may be deselected from its intended pre-merge stage; the wall-clock sleep and subprocess cases also still lack pytest timeout markers.
  • Original discussion: The reported direct-worker_removed defect remains: finalize_worker_removal unregisters slots and clears the radix tree without removing the worker from workers_with_configs or publishing the updated selector membership, so a removed worker remains selectable unless the host previously sent worker_draining.
  • Original discussion: Verified at the reviewed head: worker_removed accepts any known worker, but finalize_worker_removal does not remove it from workers_with_configs or publish the updated worker set. Calling worker_removed without worker_draining therefore leaves the removed worker eligible for selection, and later re-adding that ID poisons the handle because its router entry still exists. Remove and publish eligibility during final removal, or require the draining transition first.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: worker_removed is accepted for any known worker, but finalize_worker_removal unregisters slot/indexer state without removing the worker from workers_with_configs or publishing the new selection set. A direct removal can therefore leave the removed worker selectable, and a later worker_ready for that ID fails because the internal config still exists, poisoning the handle. Remove and publish the worker during finalization when it remains eligible, or require a preceding draining transition.

This comment merely expands NativeRouterEngineArgs; the private struct name and its capacity/topology fields already convey the same information, with no invariant or constraint added.

Aborting an admitted request frees its scheduler booking, and free_if_booking notifies queued admissions that capacity changed, but this path neither polls those admissions nor schedules a wakeup for routers without affinity (next_wakeup_ms only consults affinity.ready). Such a response can therefore report pending_count > 0 with next_wakeup_ms: null, leaving the newly ready placement stranded under the documented wakeup-driven host loop. Drain admissions here or expose an immediate non-affinity wakeup after the free.

🤖 AI Fix

Make dispatch_aborted arrange an immediate poll of newly woken admissions for every router, either by returning the released placements or by setting a general wakeup flag consumed by advance_clock.

These lines restate the test name and the immediately visible setup: two identical requests are placed and their independent decode load is asserted. They add no non-obvious reason or constraint.

🤖 AI Fix

Remove these two narrating comment lines.
