Summary

  • Persist ansible_core_version during rule registration/reconciliation and expose it in both rule catalog REST response shapes.
  • Add an idempotent database migration for existing rule catalogs; PostgreSQL uses ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS for concurrent Gateway startup.
  • Update the generated OpenAPI document and mark ADR-057 implemented.

Validation

  • Issue-focused PostgreSQL tests: 3 passed.
  • Full tests/test_rule_catalog.py: 50 passed, 5 deselected.
  • tox -e openapi: passed.
  • tox -e lint: passed applicable hooks; skillmark hooks and the OpenAPI hook were skipped (OpenAPI export was run separately).
  • Full tox -e unit did not complete: it stalled while resolving/installing ansible-collection-cisco-ios in session-venv tests; Gateway test errors were also reported during the run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Rule catalog responses now include each rule’s applicable ansible-core version range, when provided, in both list and detail responses.
    • Rule version information is retained when rules are registered or updated.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Existing installations now store ansible-core version ranges, with existing rules defaulting to an empty value.
  • Documentation
    • API documentation describes the ansible-core version field and its optional, empty-string default.
    • Upgrade instructions clarify when to restart the authority Engine after a Gateway-only image upgrade.

Walkthrough

The Gateway now persists ansible_core_version during rule registration and reconciliation. Rule list and detail REST responses expose the value. The database migration adds the column to existing rules tables.

Changes: Rule Catalog Version Applicability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Store version applicability
src/apme_gateway/db/models.py, src/apme_gateway/db/__init__.py, tests/test_rule_catalog.py
The Rule model stores ansible_core_version. Initialization and reset add the non-null column with an empty-string default when it is missing. Migration tests cover SQLite and PostgreSQL and verify that reruns preserve assigned values.
Reconcile and expose version applicability
src/apme_gateway/grpc_reporting/servicer.py, src/apme_gateway/api/router.py, docs/api/openapi.v1.json, tests/test_rule_catalog.py
Reconciliation stores the incoming value for new rules and updates existing rules. Rule list and detail responses include the value. The OpenAPI schemas document the field, and tests cover registration, reconciliation, and both response shapes.
Record support and upgrade steps
.sdlc/adrs/*, deploy/bootc/README.md
ADR-057 is listed as implemented. The bootc instructions explain when to restart the authority Engine after a Gateway-only image upgrade and when a full bootc image upgrade does not require a separate restart.

The rule catalog now persists and exposes Ansible Core applicability across migration, registration, reconciliation, and REST responses; no merge-blocking risk was established.

Explanation

Issue #502 requires four coding items: (1) a rules column and migration, (2) mapping in _reconcile_rules insert and update, (3) exposure in RuleListItem and RuleDetailOut, and (4) tests for persistence and both response shapes.

(1) Column and migration: src/apme_gateway/db/__init__.py adds _migrate_rules_table, which is called from init_db and reset_db. When rules exists and lacks ansible_core_version, it adds a TEXT NOT NULL DEFAULT '' column. PostgreSQL uses ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS. The model Rule in src/apme_gateway/db/models.py adds the field.

(2) Reconciliation: the diff to src/apme_gateway/grpc_reporting/servicer.py sets ansible_core_version=rd.ansible_core_version on new Rule rows in the insert path. It also sets existing.ansible_core_version = rd.ansible_core_version on the update path.

(3) REST exposure: the change summary for src/apme_gateway/api/router.py reports the field on RuleListItem and RuleDetailOut, populated by both converters. docs/api/openapi.v1.json documents the field on both schemas.

(4) Tests: the change summary for tests/test_rule_catalog.py reports migration tests for SQLite and PostgreSQL, persistence tests, REST list and detail tests, and reconciliation update tests. The author reports 3 issue-focused PostgreSQL tests passed and 50 tests passed in tests/test_rule_catalog.py.

Limit: the router and test changes were checked through the change summary, not the source diff. The full tox -e unit run did not complete, so the broader suite result is unknown. This does not affect the focused evidence for #502.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed area maps to issue #502 or to its ADR:

  • Source changes in src/apme_gateway/db/, grpc_reporting/servicer.py, and api/router.py implement the column, migration, reconciliation mapping, and response fields.
  • tests/test_rule_catalog.py covers the new behavior.
  • docs/api/openapi.v1.json documents the new response field.
  • .sdlc/adrs/ADR-057-per-rule-version-applicability.md and .sdlc/adrs/README.md record the ADR status change, which the PR description states.
  • deploy/bootc/README.md tells operators to restart apme-engine.service after a Gateway-only upgrade so Engine re-registers the catalog. This supports the reconciliation path that now persists the field.

No unrelated change is shown in the supplied evidence.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 5 files.

Cover the PostgreSQL upgrade path.

The test uses SQLite, so it executes only the non-PostgreSQL branch at src/apme_gateway/db/__init__.py:384-385. It does not execute the PostgreSQL statement at lines 380-383 or upgrade a PostgreSQL rules table that already exists. The gateway_db fixture creates a fresh schema with the new column before the registration tests, so those tests also skip this migration path.

Add a PostgreSQL-backed test that creates a legacy rules table, runs _migrate_rules_table twice, and asserts the existing row receives the empty default.

Add HTTP assertions for /rules and /rules/{rule_id} to the registration test.

The test named for "catalog responses" checks only the converter output. It calls _to_rule_list_item(rule) and _to_rule_detail(rule) directly and never requests GET /rules or GET /rules/{rule_id}. No other test in tests/ requests these routes, so neither endpoint's serialized ansible_core_version is checked over HTTP. A change in a route's returned payload, such as returning a different model or a dict without the field, would not fail this test. The linked issue #502 asks for tests of both response shapes. Extend the test to call both endpoints through the gateway's ASGI client and assert ansible_core_version in each JSON body. The existing client fixture pattern in tests/test_gateway_api.py (ASGITransport with base_url="http://test") can be reused.

Cover preservation of populated values on migration reruns.

The migration tests rerun _migrate_rules_table only while the row still contains the default empty string. They would pass if a rerun cleared an existing applicability specifier. Set a non-empty value after the first migration and assert that the second migration preserves it in both SQLite and PostgreSQL tests.

Suggested fix
