fix: harden publish to web for its first release - #2361
Hardens "Publish to web" for its first production release. Every item below was approved by Phil after the audit.
What changes
One canonical gateway: https://ardrive.net.AppConfig.publicationGatewayUrl (code default plus @JsonKey default, so stored configs written before the key get it without a configVersion bump) now drives the link the app shows and copies (Done and the Published view), og:image, every absolute URL in index.html, files.html and sitemap.xml, the ardrive viewer name's resolution, reading published versions back, and the post-publish warm-up (now three paths read in parallel). The data gateway setting no longer affects publications. tool/publication goldens moved to ardrive.net on both sides, and build_test_page.mjs defaults to it.
Leave-page guard.PublishCubit holds holdLeavePageGuard while the stage is publishing and releases it on done, failed and close().
Snapshot reuse must be servable. Before reusing the newest mined snapshot, the cubit asks PublicationPublisher.snapshotServes, a HEAD https://ardrive.net/raw/<id> that must answer 200 with a non-empty body. If it doesn't, the cubit makes a new snapshot. The warm-up now reads <page>/snapshot too.
Honest visibility copy. Step 1 now says "Anyone can find this page, and search engines can list its files." When hidden items are left out, it adds once: "Hidden items in a public drive can still be found."
Owner identity. Phil dropped reserved display names, so the display name stays self-declared free text. The verified address is the identity.
(b) The by-line always shows the shortened owner address in monospace, after the display name when there is one ("By Phil iKryOe...oRjA"). The look step's live preview does the same.
(c) The viewer verifies ownership. PublicationLoaderCubit makes one GraphQL lookup, transactions(ids:[snapshot]) { owner { address } }, on the gateway the page detected, which the host rule already allows. It runs before the snapshot is fetched. A different signer ends on the generic "This page can't be opened" screen. See below for when the gateway can't say.
docs/ArweaveFS.md and docs/PUBLICATIONS.md now say the display name is self-declared and the verified address is the identity.
Sync skips publication and drive-state entities. Confirmed in code: the default strategy (DriveEntityHistoryWithoutEntityTypeFilter) queries by Drive-Id and owner only. Publication manifests and drive states carry ArFS: 0.15, so they pass _isSupportedArFSVersion. createDriveEntityHistoryFromTransactions skipped only snapshot, so the other two were downloaded and written to metadataCache.
Measured on the Library QA drive: 1 publication (82,452 bytes) and 1 drive state (17,714 bytes), read on every first sync. Larger drives' drive states run to MiB.
The skip is now syncFetchesEntityData, covering snapshot, drive-state and publication. It is checked before any request.
Drive-state discovery (DriveStateEntityHistory query) and publication discovery (OwnerPublications plus PublicationRepository reads) never use this path.
Follow-ups.
(a) Cost check per item. PublicationPublisher.itemSizesOf sizes each data item, header included, with a new snapshot as its own item. DriveStatePublishCostEstimator.estimate(itemSizes:) treats the upload as free when every item is within Turbo's per-item limit and the allowance covers the total. That is the upload flow's rule, and the limit comes from TurboUploadService.maxFreeItemSizeBytes (/v1/info), else the config value. Pricing for a non-free publish is unchanged (the total).
(b) Turbo hang. PublicationUploader.postToTurbo times out after 2 minutes, which ends on Failed with Try again. That re-posts the same signed item, which Turbo keys by ID. No other Turbo call in the app sets a timeout to reuse, and all of them pass 365 days.
(c) Accessibility. The page builders (Dart and page.mjs) replace the release's viewport meta with width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0, dropping user-scalable=no and maximum-scale. Goldens are updated. The app's own web/index.html is untouched.
(d) AR timing copy now says "15 to 30 minutes".
(e) Added a phase 3 risk note: a private folder publication must not hand out the whole drive's key.
(f) sitemap.xml: not fixed, see below.
Not done, and why
sitemap.xml URLs. No correct small fix exists. The protocol only accepts URLs on the sitemap's host and under its path. Pointing entries inside the page needs either per-file manifest paths (decision 9: none in v1) or the manifest's own ID, which doesn't exist until after the sitemap is built. Recorded under Risks in PUBLICATIONS.md. files.html links are unaffected.
Expected length in the snapshot check. The discovery query doesn't return data { size }, so the check requires 200 and a non-zero content-length but can't compare it to an expected length. Adding the size means changing the shared discovery query and candidate.
No timeout on the snapshot's own Turbo post. That post goes through ArweaveDriveStateUploader, which signs a new data item on every attempt. A timeout followed by a retry could pay twice, so it was left alone.
Owner check when the gateway can't answer
GraphQL on turbo-gateway.com and ardrive.net indexes a Turbo-bundled item only when its bundle is mined (measured 2026-10-16). A first publish usually needs a new snapshot, so the gateway can't name its owner for roughly 15 to 60 minutes, and that is when the owner first opens the page.
So only a confirmed mismatch refuses the page. No answer, or a failed lookup, opens the page as declared: the display name with the short address (PublicationReady.ownerVerified is false, and the by-line is the same).
A refused page shows the generic refusal only: no title, icon or display name from its publication.json, and the window is named "ArDrive". The same applies to importer rejections.
Tests
New tests:
loader owner check: a mismatch is refused before the snapshot is fetched, an unconfirmed owner opens as declared, a refusal carries no settings, and a display name is shown as written;
by-line widget: the name beside the monospace address, confirmed or not; the refusal screen shows no title and names the window ArDrive;
cubit: the guard is held and then released on done, failed and close; a snapshot that doesn't serve is replaced; item sizes are passed; "ArDrive Photos Drive" with the display name "ArDrive Support" publishes;
publisher: item sizes, snapshotServes, ardrive.net in every written URL and in the warm-up (including snapshot), and a hung Turbo post that fails and is finished by Try again;
estimator: the per-item allowance;
AppConfig: the default for stored configs;
sync skip predicate;
page.mjs: the viewport.
flutter test: 4,067 passed, 6 skipped. flutter analyze: only the existing storybook issues. node --test tool/publication/page.test.mjs: 7 passed.
Browser check, local development build, with uploads on ar.io testnet Turbo:
Setup: the stored config was checked first (upload.services.ar-io.dev and payment.services.ar-io.dev). launch.js ran with TURBO_FREE_BYTES=0, so real Turbo was fully blocked, and AR went to the fake gateway. net.log shows 6 turbo-testnet posts and nothing else spent.
Sync of the Library QA drive: 137 requests, none to its publication (8ceMY…) or drive state (3l3i5…).
Dialog: step 1 shows the new copy and the hidden-items note (Projects folder: 2 hidden items, 1 file in a hidden folder). The title "ArDrive Photos Drive" was accepted. The review reused the snapshot and showed 0 credits (testnet's 5 MiB per-item limit can't separate the per-item and total rules).
Leave-page guard: a synthetic beforeunload was not prevented before Publish, was prevented throughout publishing (a minute of samples, mostly the warm-up of a testnet manifest ardrive.net can't serve), and was released on Done.
Done linked https://ardrive.net/<manifest>/. The posted index.html has og:image on ardrive.net and <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"> (no user-scalable). files.html and sitemap.xml list ardrive.net links. The warm-up read the page, publication.json and snapshot on ardrive.net.
Viewer, local hand-built pages over this build: a publication.json naming another owner ends on "This page can't be opened". The right owner with display name "ArDrive Support" shows "By ArDrive Support iKryOe...oRjA" with the address in monospace. Requests went only to the page host and turbo-gateway.com (the detected gateway, including its one GraphQL lookup).

The changes configure a canonical publication gateway, verify snapshot ownership during page loading, and update publication pricing, availability checks, upload handling, and page presentation. Drive-history sync also skips fetching data for selected entity types.
Adds publicationGatewayUrl, defaulting to https://ardrive.net, and uses it for publication links and gateway routing. Related fixture and test URLs use the same host.
The loader checks the gateway-reported snapshot signer against the declared owner. A confirmed mismatch refuses the page; a missing answer or lookup error allows it to open as declared. The ready state records verification, and the byline shows the declared name with the shortened owner address.
Free-upload eligibility uses per-item sizes and Turbo’s reported item limit when available. Publishing checks whether a snapshot is served, warms the manifest, publication metadata, and snapshot, times out individual Turbo posts, and holds a leave-page guard during publishing.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 660a2
Two issues should be resolved before merge. A page opened without signer confirmation looks the same as a verified page, so it could pass as belonging to its declared owner. Closing the publish dialog mid-upload can drop the leave-page warning while a paid upload is still running.

Explanation
The title "fix: harden publish to web for its first release" matches the main change. The PR hardens the Publish to web feature for its first production release. The changeset adds the ardrive.net publication gateway, a leave-page guard, snapshot-serving checks, owner verification, per-item free-upload checks, upload timeouts, and sync changes that skip publication entities. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit prefix. It does not list every change, which is expected.

Keep the leave-page guard until publishing finishes.
If back navigation closes the dialog during an upload, close() releases the guard while publisher.publish remains pending. The dialog’s barrierDismissible: false does not prevent a route pop. The owner can then close the tab without a warning and lose the job state needed to finish a paid upload. Block route pops during PublishStage.publishing, or keep an upload-owned guard until the publish future settles. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Distinguish an unverified owner in the byline.
When the gateway lookup returns null or throws, PublicationLoaderCubit opens the page with ownerVerified: false. This call no longer gives _Byline that status, so the byline presents the self-declared name and address without an unverified indication. The importer compares owner values taken from the same publication settings; it does not establish the snapshot’s signer in this case. An attacker-signed page can therefore appear to belong to its declared owner while the lookup is unavailable. Pass ownerVerified to _Byline and show an explicit unverified state, or defer owner branding until verification succeeds. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

@coderabbitai Thanks. On the two outside-diff comments:
Leave-page guard (publish_cubit.dart:704): fixed in 608fee0. Verified: a route pop closed the cubit and released the guard while publisher.publish kept running. The guard now belongs to the upload. close() doesn't release it while a publish runs, and publish() releases it in finally once the cubit is closed. The dialog also wraps itself in PopScope(canPop: false) during PublishStage.publishing. The test the leave-page guard outlives a dialog closed mid-publish until the upload settles fails on the previous code.
Unverified by-line (publication_chrome.dart:213): not changing, by design.
The window is expected. A new page's snapshot isn't in gateway GraphQL until its Turbo bundle is mined, which takes roughly 15 to 60 minutes. That's when owners open their new page. Marking it "unverified", or withholding the by-line, would mislabel every new page.
A confirmed mismatch is still refused. The by-line always carries the owner's address beside the self-declared display name, so the display name never stands alone.
The remaining exposure is bounded. A hand-built page whose snapshot isn't indexed yet can claim an address only until indexing, and from then on it's refused.
The trade-off is recorded in docs/PUBLICATIONS.md and docs/ArweaveFS.md.
Leave-page guard: The inspected code matches your fix. close() retains the guard while publishing runs. The finally block releases it after the closed cubit’s upload settles. PopScope also blocks route pops during publishing. The regression test covers closure before upload completion. I did not run the tests.
Unverified byline: I withdraw the recommendation to label or withhold it. docs/PUBLICATIONS.md and docs/ArweaveFS.md explicitly define this fallback. A missing or failed lookup permits the declared byline, with the shortened address beside the display name. A confirmed signer mismatch still requires refusal. This fallback does not establish verified ownership.
