Summary

getTokenByClientCredentials now accepts an optional scope and sends it on the client credentials
grant. Without it, a caller cannot ask for a narrower token than the client's full grant.

@auth0/auth0-api-js needs this for its upcoming getClientCredentialsToken, which lets an API request a
machine-to-machine token for a downstream API with only the scopes it needs. That change depends on this
release, so it is split out here to land and ship first.

Changes

  • scope is an optional, space-delimited string on the client credentials options, applied on both
the default and the fullResponse code paths.
  • It is forwarded whenever it is not undefined. Existing callers send the same request as before.
  • An empty string is forwarded rather than dropped, because it is a request for zero scopes and should
stay distinct from omitting the option.

Testing

Six new tests cover both code paths: scope reaches the token endpoint when set, the parameter is
omitted when not set, and an empty string is forwarded. Existing client credentials tests pass unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Client credentials requests can now include an optional scope. Whitespace is normalized, and omitted or null scope values are left out of the request.
    • Blank or non-string scope values now return a clear InvalidScopeError before a request is sent.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how requested scopes are checked, how to read granted scopes from token responses, and what a missing response scope indicates.

getTokenByClientCredentials accepted an audience and an organization but had no
way to request a narrowed set of scopes, so a caller always received whatever
the client's full grant allowed. Add an optional scope option and append it to
the token request on both the bare and the full-response code paths.

The option is tested against undefined rather than for truthiness. An empty
string is a meaningful request for zero scopes, so it now reaches the token
endpoint instead of being silently dropped, which keeps it distinct from
omitting the option altogether. Tests cover both paths and pin the empty-string
behaviour.

📝 Walkthrough

Client-credentials token requests now accept an optional scope. The client normalizes scope whitespace, omits nullish values, and raises InvalidScopeError for blank or non-string values. Tests and documentation cover request behavior and response scope interpretation.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1527c

TypeScript callers cannot pass a documented value, and the token guide may lead callers to underestimate a token’s privileges. Correct both before release if practical.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1527c

The implementation preserves the existing client identity and token-grant boundary. However, conflicting guidance about effective scopes could lead downstream callers to mistake a full-grant token for a restricted one. The explicit least-privilege warning limits this risk, and no production privilege escalation has been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new effective-scope guidance gives incompatible permission interpretations: it warns that successful Auth0 requests retain the client's full audience grant, then states that an absent response scope means the requested scopes were granted. The SDK preserves an absent scope, and the added mocks accept subset requests without returning scope. A downstream caller following the fallback could therefore underestimate token authority if a deployed endpoint returns a full-grant token without that field. This is a conditional integration risk, not a verified production attack path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The conditional permission-confusion risk concerns downstream use of a token carrying the configured client's audience grant. Scope does not select a new client identity or derive audience or organization. Exploitation would require a caller to obtain or forward such a token under an incorrect narrower-permissions assumption; unauthenticated reachability and authority beyond the existing grant are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The documentation ambiguity is newly introduced, but token-scope pass-through predates this PR. The mocked subset-request response demonstrates the missing-field shape, not that production returns excess permissions in that shape. The supplied candidate remains deferred, so the evidence supports a conditional architecture concern rather than a verified privilege-escalation finding.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing client configuration continues to supply authentication. Caller-controlled scope is a form parameter, not a replacement credential or destination. Local validation rejects blank and non-string scope before network discovery; authorization of valid scope requests remains the token endpoint's responsibility.

…tials grant

Treat null scope as omitted, normalize whitespace to single spaces, and
throw InvalidScopeError for a blank or non-string value, since Auth0 treats
an empty scope as omitted and returns the full grant. Tests now capture the
whole request body and cover both response paths.

- Around line 230-233: Update the scope guidance following the Auth0 warning so
it does not imply that an omitted response scope limits the token to the
requested scopes. State that omission does not establish a narrower grant and
preserve that an explicit response scope, including an empty value, is
authoritative.

- Line 275: Update the optional scope property in the relevant type so it
accepts string or null, matching its documented caller behavior under strict
null checks.
