TL;DR

Removes the custom cpi/utils.Logger wrapper and uses boshlog.Logger (from bosh-utils) directly everywhere - consistent with bosh-agent, bosh-director, and every other Go CPI. The wrapper introduced two bugs that are fixed as a consequence. Also normalises log tags to snake_case struct fields, message style to sentence case, and error wrap strings to descriptive "failed to ..." form throughout the codebase.

Problem

Unnecessary cpi/utils.Logger wrapper

The codebase defined its own Logger interface in cpi/utils/logger.go that wrapped boshlog.Logger from bosh-utils. boshlog.Logger is already designed as a mockable interface - bosh-agent, bosh-director, and every other Go CPI use it directly. The extra layer served no purpose and introduced two bugs:

Variadic forwarding bug - All four wrapper methods (Info, Warn, Error, Debug) forwarded the variadic args slice as a single value instead of spreading it:

// Before - args passed as one extra argument
func (l logger) Info(tag, msg string, args ...interface{}) {
    l.logger.Info(tag, msg, args)
}

Every CPI log line carried a %!(EXTRA []interface {}=[]) suffix in task debug logs.

Broken panic recovery - HandlePanic delegated to boshlog.HandlePanic, which internally calls recover(). Go only allows recover() to catch a panic when called directly by a deferred function. The extra call frame meant panics in the CPI crashed the process without any log output.

The wrapper also required a TargetLogger() escape hatch in cpi.go to recover the underlying logger when passing it to rpc.NewFactory.

Inconsistent log tags and message style

Several methods passed hardcoded string literals as the tag at each call site with inconsistent naming (hyphens, ad-hoc suffixes like _method). Two Warn calls in compute_service.go had message and tag swapped. Messages mixed UPPER CASE, Capitalised, and lower case starts. Many fmt.Errorf calls used bare "op: %w" prefixes rather than intent-describing strings.

Changes

cpi/utils/logger.go - deleted

The file and the utils.Logger interface are removed. All struct fields and function parameters previously typed as utils.Logger now use boshlog.Logger directly. The TargetLogger() escape hatch in cpi.go is gone. The logger fake in cpi/utils/utilsfakes is regenerated against boshlog.Logger.

All method and service files (methods/, compute/, network/, loadbalancer/)

  • Added a logTag string field (initialised to snake_case, e.g. "compute_service", "delete_disk", "network_service") on every struct that holds a logger, matching the pattern used in bosh-agent.
  • All log calls updated to use s.logTag / c.logTag instead of per-call literals.
  • Fixed the two Warn calls in compute_service.go where message was passed as tag.
  • Log messages normalised to sentence case.
  • fmt.Errorf wraps changed to descriptive intent strings: "failed to delete disk: %w", "failed to attach disk: %w", etc.

All existing tests updated to match the corrected tag/message strings, and the full test suite (go test ./...) passes without changes to test logic.

Walkthrough

The CPI now uses boshlog.Logger directly instead of its local logger wrapper. Service and method log calls use stored tags and pass format strings and arguments separately. Several operation errors now use revised descriptive prefixes. The fake logger implements the BOSH logger interface, and unit and integration tests reflect the updated logging arguments and error text. Described operation and retry flows remain unchanged.

Suggested reviewers: oboehrer, a-hassanin

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2beb7

The logger migration preserves CPI operation behavior, and retry warnings now format error text safely. No actionable merge risk remains in the reviewed changes.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2beb7

The inspected changes preserve retry decisions and the existing diagnostic destination. No introduced security concern was established. The shared interface replacement carries compatibility risk, and the claimed panic-recovery improvement is not supported by the bundled logger implementation.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established change affects shared CPI diagnostics and Go caller compatibility, not a newly exposed network entrypoint. The routed retry-test ranges change warning assertions rather than production reachability. The inspected evidence does not establish tenant-wide or credential exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Retry warnings pass error values as arguments to literal format strings, matching the BOSH logger contract. In this inspected path, the migration does not turn error text into the format-string input.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The claimed panic-recovery repair is not established: main directly defers HandlePanic, but the bundled implementation still calls recover indirectly through recoverPanic. This implementation is unchanged from the PR base, so it is a pre-existing failure-containment limitation, not an introduced concern.

…message style

Remove the custom cpi/utils.Logger wrapper and use boshlog.Logger from
bosh-utils directly everywhere, consistent with bosh-agent, bosh-director,

value, so every log line carried a %!(EXTRA []interface {}=[]) suffix; using
boshlog directly removes that bug and the TargetLogger() escape hatch.

Also normalise log tags to the snake_case struct-field style, message text to
sentence case, and error wrap strings to descriptive "failed to ..." form
throughout, and fix goimports import ordering.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Remove the leftover (detach_disk) suffix from the error.

The PR removes method-name prefixes from errors. This message still includes the old tag as "(detach_disk)", so it does not match the other messages.

Remove fmt.Sprintf pre-formatting from the four Warn calls in
RetryOnError — if an error message contains %, pre-formatting
causes double-interpolation artifacts in the logger output.
Pass the format string and args directly instead, matching the
pattern used everywhere else in the PR.

Introduce a local logTag constant in RetryOnError and main() to
avoid repeating the literal tag string at every call site.
