Follow these instructions to set up a new Mac.
- Update macOS from System Settings.
- Install the macOS Command Line Tools with
xcode-select --install. - Clone this repository to
~/.dotfiles. - Run
./installfrom the repository. - Open a new terminal after the installer changes the login shell.
The installer supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Homebrew prefixes. It links the dotfiles, installs the Brewfile, and selects Homebrew's zsh. It does not change macOS preferences unless explicitly requested:
Before linking, the installer moves existing managed files to timestamped
backups such as ~/.zshrc.pre-dotfiles-20260831-153000. Existing symlinks are
relinked without creating backups.
APPLY_MACOS_DEFAULTS=1 ./installReview macos before using that option. It changes system settings
and replaces the default Dock contents.
If you want to start your own dotfiles from this setup, it's pretty easy to do so. First of all you'll need to fork this repo. After that you can tweak it the way you want.
