🪱 LEECH

A juicy, single‑file browser arcade game. You're a leech slithering through murky brackish water — eat bugs to grow, chain combos for points, and survive the predator that hunts you once you're big enough to be worth eating. Don't hit the walls. Don't get swallowed. Your own body is always safe to cross.

Think classic Snake, reimagined with smooth organic movement, a living underwater world, and a real sense of dread.

Play it

No build, no install, no server. Just open index.html in any modern browser.

open index.html # macOS
# or double-click the file

(Optional) serve it locally:

python3 -m http.server 4321
# then visit http://localhost:4321

Controls

Input Action
Arrow keys / WASD Steer (the leech smoothly turns toward your heading)
Shift (hold) Dash — a burst of speed that slowly costs you length
Space / Enter Start / restart
P / Esc Pause
M Mute

How to play

  • Eat to grow. Bugs are everywhere (+points, +length). Watch for the rare glowing larva (big points) and the blood drop (bonus + juice).
  • Chain combos. Eat again before the combo bar runs out to ramp your multiplier ×2, ×3, ×4… The longer the chain, the bigger the score.
  • It gets faster. Your speed climbs as you grow — control gets tense late.
  • Beware the fish. Once you've grown past a threshold, a predator trout starts hunting. It usually snaps at your tail (you lose a chunk → shorter, slower), but it will occasionally commit to a telegraphed kill‑lunge at your head — let it connect and you're done. Juke it, or burn a dash to escape.
  • Turn the tables. Grow big enough and a glowing ring appears around the fish — now it's prey. Dash into it to devour it for a huge score and a wide, satisfying chomp. (You can only swallow it while dashing.)
  • Die by: hitting a wall, or getting your head caught in a kill‑lunge. Crossing your own body is always safe (snake.io rules).

Your best score is saved locally between sessions.

Features

  • 🐍 Smooth, organic slithering body with an undulating swim and a real leech sucker‑mouth that chomps when it eats
  • 🌊 Atmospheric brackish‑water scene — depth gradient, light shafts, drifting particulate, rising bubbles, swaying reeds, vignette
  • 🐟 A predator fish with stalk / lunge AI and two distinct attacks — and once you're big enough, dash into it to eat it in a dramatic wide‑gape chomp
  • 🔥 Combo multipliers, a speed ramp, a dash mechanic, and three food types
  • 🎵 Fully procedural audio — ambient underwater music and reactive sound effects synthesized in‑browser (no audio files)
  • ✨ Juice everywhere: particle bursts, floating score popups, screen shake, danger pulse, and a slow‑mo red‑bloom death
  • 🖥️ Title, pause, and game‑over screens with persistent high score

Tech

  • Vanilla JavaScript, HTML5 Canvas 2D, Web Audio API
  • Zero dependencies, zero build step — the entire game (logic, hand‑drawn vector art, and procedural audio) lives in one index.html
  • Fixed‑timestep game loop, responsive to any window size

Project layout

index.html the whole game
