Summary

This fixes a second way the client reuses a session the server has already ended. #13 covered sessions that sit idle for more than 2 minutes. This one covers sessions that never carry a stream, which the server ends after only 15 s.

How it happens:

  • DialContext starts a handshake, and the dial's context ends before the handshake completes. This is typical when kindling races Soar against other transports and one of them wins.
  • The handshake completes anyway, so the session is established but never carries a stream.
  • The server ends a session that sends no data within 15 s of its hello (server.go, sweep).
  • The client kept that session until SessionIdle (90 s). The next dial 15–90 s later failed within a round trip with soar: server lost the session.

Seen in production. Soar fails to connect 0.1–1 s after joining the race at 8 s: there are 30 such failures in the 36 hours to 2026-10-18 03:00 UTC, including after #13 shipped in beta 5. Kindling's 8 s start delay makes this the common path, because domain fronting often wins about half a second after Soar joins. Every such race strands a session for the next request.

Change

  • clientSession.used is set when a stream opens on the session.
  • retireIfIdle retires a session that has never been used after unusedSessionIdle (10 s, under the server's 15 s) instead of after SessionIdle. A session that has carried a stream still gets the full SessionIdle.
  • An unused session's age is measured from its first hello (clientSession.firstHello), not from the hello's reply. The server times the session from the hello, and a retried hello gets the same session back, so a slow handshake has already used up part of the limit.
  • A session that came up less than a second ago (freshSessionGrace) is kept regardless, because a Dial waiting on its handshake is about to open a stream.
  • SPEC §7.4 gains a note on this.

Tests

  • TestCanceledDialDoesNotStrandASession (e2e):
    • A gated test resolver holds the hello's answer while the Dial is cancelled, then releases it.
    • The test asserts the client has an established, unused session, waits 16 s, then fetches.
    • Without the fix it fails every time with soar: server lost the session, the production error.
  • TestDialRetiresAnUnusedSessionSooner: an unused session is kept just under 10 s and retired just past it, even with SessionIdle set to a minute.
  • TestUnusedSessionAgeCountsFromFirstHello: with the first hello 11 s ago and the reply 3 s ago, the session is retired. A session that came up 0.5 s ago is kept.
  • Mutation checks:
    • Removing the unused limit fails all three new tests.
    • Measuring from lastAuth instead of firstHello fails the first-hello test, and so does dropping the grace.
    • Never setting used fails TestIdleSessionSurvivesResume, because a session in normal use would then be retired after a 17 s pause.
  • go test -race ./... passes.

A Dial whose context ends mid-handshake, as when another transport wins
the race, still completes the handshake and leaves a session that never
carries a stream. The server ends such a session 15 s after its hello,
but the client kept it for SessionIdle (90 s), so the next Dial in that
window failed with "soar: server lost the session". With kindling's 8 s
start delay this is the common case: Soar joins, domain fronting wins
half a second later, and the next Soar attempt fails at once.

A session is now marked used when a stream opens on it, and an unused
one is retired after 10 s. SPEC 7.4 notes it.

📝 Walkthrough

The client tracks whether each session has carried a stream. It applies a 10-second idle limit to sessions that have not carried one, while sessions that have carried a stream retain the configured idle limit. Tests cover both retirement behavior and a canceled-dial scenario.

Changes: Unused session retirement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track stream use and apply idle limits
client.go, SPEC.md
clientSession records whether a stream has opened. The client caps the idle limit at 10 seconds until then. Section 7.4 documents this limit.
Verify unused session retirement
client_gaps_test.go, e2e_test.go
Unit tests check retention before the unused-session limit and retirement after it. An end-to-end test checks that a fetch succeeds after a dial is canceled during handshake.

🟡 Changes recommended

Delayed hello replies still permit reuse of expired sessions, and the regression test needs deterministic cancellation.

Comment thread client.go Resolved
Review on #14. The server times an unused session from its hello, and a
retried hello gets the same session back, so a handshake whose reply
arrived late had already used up part of the 15 s. The client now
records when the first hello went out and measures an unused session's
age from it; a session that came up less than a second ago is spared,
since a Dial waiting on its handshake is about to use it.

TestCanceledDialDoesNotStrandASession no longer leans on a 1 ms race: a
gated test resolver holds the hello's answer until the Dial is
cancelled, and the test asserts the abandoned session is established and
unused before waiting out the server's limit.
