DevTools

A collection of 100+ essential developer tools built with privacy in mind. No backend. Tool data never reaches a developers.do server. Anonymized analytics help improve the site. The few tools that exist to call an external API — iOS App Lookup and API Tester — send input from your browser directly to that third party.

AI Discoverability

This site supports the llms.txt standard for AI discoverability:

  • /llms.txt - Concise overview of all tools
  • /llms-full.txt - Detailed documentation for AI consumption
  • Per-tool markdown mirrors at /tools/<id>.md (e.g. /tools/json-prettifier.md) - full guide, FAQs, and references for every tool hosted on this site, linked from llms.txt
  • Link response headers advertising llms.txt and llms-full.txt on every page (via vercel.json for Vercel, nginx.conf for self-hosting)

Prerequisites

Ensure you have the following installed on your system:

  • Git: For cloning the repository.
  • Node.js 20 or later: The JavaScript runtime. npm ships with it and is the package manager used here.

Getting Started

Follow these steps to get the application up and running on your local machine.

1. Clone the Repository

git clone https://github.com/hminaya/devtools.git
cd devtools

2. Install Dependencies

npm install

3. Run the Application

npm run dev

The application will typically be accessible at http://localhost:3000 in your web browser.

Customizing the Port

By default, the application runs on port 3000, which is hardcoded in the dev script. To use a different port, run the dev server directly:

npx next dev -p 8080

Alternatively, edit the dev script in package.json to change the port permanently.

Available Scripts

In the project directory, you can run:

  • npm run dev: Runs the app in development mode.
  • npm run build: Builds the application for production. Runs generate:llms first via the prebuild hook.
  • npm run start: Serves the production static export from out/ (after building).
  • npm run lint: Type-checks the codebase with TypeScript.
  • npm run generate:og: Generates Open Graph images for tools.
  • npm run generate:llms: Regenerates the /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt files plus per-tool markdown mirrors in /public/tools/.

Docker

You can build and run the app locally using Docker — no Node.js installation required.

Build the image

docker build -t developers-do .

Run the container

docker run -p 8080:80 developers-do

The app will be available at http://localhost:8080.

How it works

The Docker build uses a two-stage process:

  1. Builder — installs dependencies with npm ci and runs npm run build, producing static HTML/CSS/JS in the out/ directory.
  2. Runner — copies the static files into an nginx image for serving. No Node.js is needed at runtime.
