Description

Completes and fixes Hysteria 2 UDP Port Hopping support (superseding #631):

  1. Continuous Multi-Interval Hopping: Fixed an issue where the previous implementation only hopped once and ceased further hopping because prev_conn was never cleaned up when pending.
  2. Dual-Stack IPv4 / IPv6 Support: Bound sockets to IPv4 or IPv6 based on the server destination rather than hardcoding 0.0.0.0:0.
  3. In-Flight Packet Draining & Address Rewriting: Retains the previous socket during a drain window so in-flight packets are received and rewritten with the connection's original peer address, preventing Quinn from rejecting datagrams.
  4. Composition with Salamander: UdpHop can now be combined seamlessly with Salamander obfuscation when both ports and obfs: salamander are configured.
  5. Configurable Hop Interval: Added hop_interval (alias hop-interval, defaults to 30s) to Hysteria 2 proxy configuration.
  6. Interface and Mark Preservation: Re-binds outbound interface and sets Linux socket mark on all newly hopped sockets.
  7. Unit Tests: Added test coverage for IPv4/IPv6 socket binding, multi-hop cycle, and in-flight packet receipt/draining.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Hysteria2 connections can switch between configured ports at a configurable interval, defaulting to 30 seconds when no interval is specified.
    • During a port switch, the previous connection remains available briefly to receive in-flight packets while traffic moves to the new port.
    • Port hopping can be combined with Salamander obfuscation, and connections continue to support outbound interface and socket-mark settings.
    • Port selection uses the default port first, followed by configured ports and ranges without duplicates.

- support continuous multi-interval udp port hopping
- bind socket to IPv4 or IPv6 according to server destination
- drain in-flight packets from previous socket and rewrite remote address
- add hop_interval configuration option (defaults to 30s)
- seamlessly compose UdpHop with Salamander obfuscation when both are configured
- preserve interface binding and socket mark across socket hops
- add unit tests for multi-hop cycles, IPv4/IPv6, and in-flight packet draining

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Hysteria2 configuration now accepts a port-hop interval. UDP port hopping rotates sockets and drains the previous socket for a limited period. Outbound endpoint setup supports port hopping and Salamander obfuscation together or separately.

Changes

Hysteria2 port hopping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hop interval and port configuration
clash-lib/src/config/internal/proxy.rs, clash-lib/src/proxy/converters/hysteria2.rs, clash-lib/src/proxy/hysteria2/outbound/mod.rs
Hysteria2 configuration and HystOption now carry an optional hop interval. Conversion maps seconds to Duration. PortGenerator::all_ports returns the default port first, followed by configured ports and inclusive ranges in sorted, deduplicated order.
UDP socket creation and hopping
clash-lib/src/proxy/utils/socket_helpers.rs, clash-lib/src/proxy/hysteria2/udp_hop.rs
Socket creation now has a synchronous standard-library helper, with the async Tokio helper delegating to it. UdpHop uses the server address and socket options to create sockets, rotates ports, and retains the previous socket for packet draining. Tests cover address-family binding, repeated hops, retirement, packet receipt from both sockets, and receive wakeups.
Outbound endpoint integration
clash-lib/src/proxy/hysteria2/outbound/mod.rs, clash-lib/src/proxy/hysteria2/salamander.rs
Endpoint selection supports port hopping with Salamander, port hopping alone, Salamander alone, or neither. Salamander::from_abstract constructs the obfuscator around an existing UDP socket.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e3327

Setting the Hysteria2 hop interval to zero can repeatedly replace sockets and lose replies. A nonzero setting avoids this edge case; reject zero before merging or document and accept the limitation.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e3327

Repeated hopping preserves the configured routing controls and authentication setup. However, prioritizing the draining socket can let unsolicited traffic delay legitimate traffic on the active socket, and a zero interval collapses the intended rotation and drain timing. The identified exposure is availability of affected outbound connections; data disclosure or authentication bypass was not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Receive selection now returns immediately on any packets from the draining socket. A network attacker able to keep that previous local UDP port readable can prevent polling the active socket during the remaining drain window, before downstream obfuscation or QUIC processing can reject the traffic. The base polled the current socket even after receiving previous-socket packets. Retirement limits each starvation window to at most min(interval, 10 seconds); the concern is availability, not established authentication bypass.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new interval contract accepts zero without validation. With hopping enabled, successful socket creation can rotate on every send or writable check and set an immediate drain deadline; failed creation also loses interval-based retry spacing. This can disrupt the shared outbound connection and its dependent sessions. The configuration requires authority to set the interval, and the ordinary absent-value default remains 30 seconds.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified packet-driven exposure requires access to the draining local UDP port and enough traffic to keep it readable; no Hysteria password or obfuscation key is needed to reach socket selection. The impact is delayed active-socket reception for the affected endpoint. Because the outbound handler reuses its authenticated connection, dependent sessions can share that availability impact. Deployment filtering and cross-handler impact are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Unsolicited datagrams can make the previous socket return a positive receive count, causing UdpHop to return before polling the active socket. Any subsequent rejection occurs after this scheduling decision. Sustained readability can therefore starve active reception until retirement, but the deadline check limits the window and no authenticated-data injection was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Socket rotation does not replace the configured TLS verifier or Hysteria authentication step. The caller installs its client configuration, awaits QUIC establishment, and requires a successful Hysteria authentication response before returning the connection. These are downstream controls, not proof of the unavailable dependency's exact forged-datagram handling.
  • observed — The combined configuration wraps UdpHop with Salamander before supplying it to Quinn. Salamander transforms outgoing payloads before delegated sends and incoming payloads after delegated receives, so the new composition does not select an unobfuscated send path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The state stores one previous socket with a retirement deadline. Retirement is enforced when receive polling resumes, not by an independent cleanup timer. Replacement failures retain the active socket, and previous-socket receive errors fall through to the current socket rather than terminating reception immediately.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give active-socket reception a bounded opportunity even while the previous socket remains continuously readable, and define a positive supported interval range so rotation, draining, and retry spacing cannot collapse to zero.
  • proposed — Make receive-error cleanup conditional on the stored previous socket still matching the socket that was polled. This would protect ownership if concurrent polling and hopping occur; the current production scheduling evidence does not establish that race as a reachable finding.

Reject a zero hop_interval.

The converter accepts zero, and UdpHop uses it to rotate sockets whenever try_send or poll_writable checks the interval. The next receive poll retires the previous socket before polling it, so replies sent to that socket can be lost. Reject zero; the inspected code does not establish a five-second minimum.
