Overview

The scanner's host sensor reads the hostdata.kubescape.cloud resources node-agent serves, so the host-scanner-definition ConfigMap, rendered empty since its asset left the chart, its volume and mount and KS_HOST_SCAN_YAML go; KS_ENABLE_HOST_SCANNER stays, it enables the CRD-based sensor. The remediation ClusterRole grants patch on pods, not nodes: no remediator patches a node, and cordon brings the grant back when it lands in the operator. The comments in values.yaml and in the ClusterRole say what is granted today (#982).

How to Test

helm dependency build charts/kubescape-operator
helm unittest charts/kubescape-operator

tests/kubescape_host_scanner_test.yaml: the deployment keeps KS_ENABLE_HOST_SCANNER and carries no host-scanner mount, volume or variable. tests/least_privilege_rbac_test.yaml: remediation patches pods, not nodes. The mounted-either-way case in tests/kubescape_download_artifacts_test.yaml goes with the mount, and the snapshot is regenerated.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Host scanning no longer uses a separately mounted scanner definition or the associated deployment setting.
    • Remediation permissions no longer include patch access to nodes; patch permissions remain for workloads and pods.
  • Documentation
    • Remediation permission descriptions now reflect the implemented annotate and quarantine actions and note that node permissions will be added when cordon is available.

Walkthrough

The chart removes the file-based host-scanner ConfigMap and deployment references. It also removes node patch permission from remediation RBAC and updates related documentation and tests.

Changes: Host scanner configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove file-based host-scanner configuration
charts/kubescape-operator/templates/kubescape/*, charts/kubescape-operator/tests/kubescape_*
The chart no longer renders or mounts the host-scanner ConfigMap or sets KS_HOST_SCAN_YAML. A chart test checks that KS_ENABLE_HOST_SCANNER is enabled and file-based scanner markers are absent.

Remediation RBAC

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove node patch permission
charts/kubescape-operator/templates/operator/clusterrole.yaml, charts/kubescape-operator/values.yaml, charts/kubescape-operator/tests/*
The remediation patch rule covers pods, not nodes. The chart documentation and RBAC tests reflect the updated permission set.

The current permissions are correct, but the test could miss a future node-patch grant. Strengthen the assertion or track the coverage gap.

Explanation

Directly linked issue #982 asks whether to remove the host-scanner leftovers now or keep the nodes patch grant until cordon lands. Its expected behavior accepts removing the host-scanner ConfigMap, mount, and KS_HOST_SCAN_YAML, or restoring the asset. It also requires the nodes patch grant to be present when cordon lands, and it says KS_ENABLE_HOST_SCANNER must stay. The PR meets each point as follows. (1) charts/kubescape-operator/templates/kubescape/deployment.yaml removes KS_HOST_SCAN_YAML, the host-scanner-definition mount, and its volume (+0/-8). KS_ENABLE_HOST_SCANNER is not removed. (2) templates/kubescape/host-scanner-definition-configmap.yaml is deleted. (3) templates/operator/clusterrole.yaml no longer grants patch on nodes under capabilities.remediation. Patch on apps workloads and pods remains. No remediator patches nodes, per the issue. Cordon has not landed, so the grant is not needed now. The comments state that cordon permission will be granted when that action is implemented. Automated tests cover these points. tests/kubescape_host_scanner_test.yaml asserts KS_ENABLE_HOST_SCANNER is "true" and that KS_HOST_SCAN_YAML and host-scanner-definition do not appear. tests/least_privilege_rbac_test.yaml asserts a pods patch rule and rejects a rule that patches nodes. tests/kubescape_download_artifacts_test.yaml drops the mounted-either-way case. Helm unittest was not run during this assessment, so test pass results are not established. Only the test definitions, as summarized, were reviewed. #979 is a reference only and adds no requirement here.

Explanation

Every changed area ties to #982. Changes: removal of the host-scanner ConfigMap template, volume, mount, and KS_HOST_SCAN_YAML from the deployment; removal of nodes patch from the remediation ClusterRole; updated comments in clusterrole.yaml and values.yaml that describe the current grants; removal of the host-scanner-dependent test case in kubescape_download_artifacts_test.yaml; new tests in kubescape_host_scanner_test.yaml and least_privilege_rbac_test.yaml for the new state; and a one-line expectation change in tests/snapshot_test.yaml. These support the #982 objective and do not add unrelated behavior. The regenerated snapshot file charts/kubescape-operator/tests/snapshot/snapshot_test.yaml.snap is excluded by the rule !**/*.snap and was not inspected. Its content is a generated artifact of the same rendered change. This verdict does not depend on its content, so the exclusion does not block it.

Make the negative assertion detect mixed-verb node rules.

The exact-content assertion does not match a nodes rule whose verbs are ["get", "patch"]. Helm-unittest uses reflect.DeepEqual for exact matching. Its any: true subset path also compares each field with reflect.DeepEqual, so it does not make ["patch"] match ["get", "patch"]. A regression that adds node patch beside an existing node get grant can therefore pass this test. Use an assertion that checks the verbs field independently of the complete rule object.

The base chart references an absent asset, leaving an empty host-scanner ConfigMap; the current host sensor uses node-agent CRDs and the enable switch remains. The operator does not yet implement cordon, so removing its broad node patch permission aligns the chart with the implemented actions. The maintainer explicitly requested both changes in #982. #773 introduced the CRD-based sensor; #979 is complementary RBAC cleanup, not a duplicate. #855 originally granted node patch in anticipation of cordon; #982 explicitly supersedes that decision until cordon lands. Closed #844 moved legacy DaemonSet cleanup to the ARMO chart, rather than rejecting this cleanup. Searches across open and closed PRs and issues for host scanner, cordon, and remediation found no superseding PR; search is keyword-limited and not exhaustive.

Nonblocking: the new negative RBAC assertion matches one exact rule and can miss other node-patch rule shapes, as the existing CodeRabbit review notes. The current rendered rule itself is correct.

Validation: in a network-disabled, unprivileged container, helm dependency build, helm lint charts/kubescape-operator --set clusterName=review, and the host-scanner and least-privilege unittest suites passed (7 tests); git diff --check passed. The exact head's reported checks passed, but no full Helm suite, live cluster upgrade, runtime host scan, or before/after regression execution was performed. The PR was open, non-draft and mergeable with unchanged head and base at the final check.

Two leftovers to decide on: nodes patch ahead of cordon, and the host-scanner ConfigMap without its asset
