In Wayland you should not just set things like $GTK_IM_MODULE. Some changes should be made here.

However I have not yet figured out how.

I have now, barely though, figured out how openSUSE manages IMs by default. I mean, if you do nothing and just install the needed packages and recommended packages by simply press enter in zypper or presses confirm button in YaST when it wants to deal with i18n or IMs for you.

After installing ibus it creates a desktop file under .etc/xdg/autostart and so it is the case with fcitx5. And as a recommended package, this is also installed. All environment variables are just managed by this one, by adding configuration files under /usr/lib/environment.d, which is how environment variables are managed by systemd. It just finds ONE of the EXISTING IM installed, it can be fcitx, ibus, gcin or something else. NO guarantee which one is chosen, mostly by the launch sequence. It just chooses the one up when the py3 starts.

Thus, if you need to MANUALLY choose an IM module between ibus and fcitx5, it is quite hard.

This script does not in fact help you CHOOSE an IM, but just ASSIGNS ONE VALID alternative for you.

Under /usr/etc/X11/xim.d/ you can find files ibus belonging to ibus package and fcitx from fcitx package, and others installed in your system.

Yes, you can uninstall either of them, but it is quite bad if you are using multiple DEs like me. I am using a WM which does not support ibus well, and GNOME which has poor fcitx support and can only rely on an extension which might break down any time GNOME has an upgrade. I suppose to assign IM in hyprland profile but it is often overwritten by this, which is confusing. You can simply assign one or let it decide which one to assign for you.

And, it has not been upgraded for quite a long time. In wayland, you do not need the GTK_IM_MODULE but you still need it in Xwayland. It cannot deal with some complex situations, and you need to uninstall or remove this, along with some other things.

So, I personally suggest anyone who feel confused about the IM management on openSUSE, just simply REMOVE the auto-start desktop files provided in the packages aimed to bring you an OUT-OF-BOX but IT-JUST-WORKS experience,

I am now tired of fighting against the profiles on IM and my solution is just remove them all and write a ~/.login file. Everything is totally peaceful then.
