Upgrade to use es6 language features?

It'd improve code readability and conciseness if we could use ES6 language features. If there's an ongoing requirement to support engines that don't support them, perhaps we could add a build step to convert back to older language versions.

Hard to say, I can't remember now specifically which language features I was hoping for! Anyway I think it should be a two step process:

• Step 1 (now done) to upgrade the build system to take ES6,
• Step 2 to adopt the new language features where that makes the code easier to read and maintain.
