I've been building software for over 20 years, much of it in email infrastructure and security. I work on mail servers, protocols, performance, and the tools needed to run and troubleshoot them.
I spent a decade at Mimecast as a Team Lead and Principal Engineer. I led one of the three MTA teams, responsible for the MTA itself and end-to-end testing.
I enjoy getting into the details of SMTP and MIME, tracking down interoperability bugs, and making systems more reliable. I've also mentored engineers, helped teams improve how they build and deliver software, and represented organizations at industry events.
These days I'm building the Robin Suite, a self-hosted email stack with administration, diagnostics, and webmail.
| Area | Technologies & Practice |
|---|---|
| Email & security | SMTP/ESMTP, MIME, IMAP, LMTP, POP3, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, MTA-STS, DANE/TLSA, TLS-RPT, Rspamd, ClamAV |
| Software engineering | Java, PHP, Python, JavaScript, SQL, Groovy, Bash; protocol interoperability, performance tuning, end-to-end testing |
| Data & storage | PostgreSQL, Redis, MySQL/MariaDB, SQLite |
| Delivery & operations | Linux, macOS, Docker/Compose, Git, Maven, Jenkins, GitHub Actions; CI/CD, monitoring, telemetry |
A suite for hosting and managing your own email infrastructure.
The Robin Suite runs Robin MTA alongside Dovecot, Rspamd, ClamAV, PostgreSQL, and Redis. Robin Admin manages the services, Robin Tools helps troubleshoot them, and Robin Webmail provides the mailbox UI.
| Project | Role |
|---|---|
| Robin MTA | SMTP reception, submission, routing, durable queues, scanner integration, and programmable end-to-end delivery testing. |
| Robin Admin | Service and mailbox administration, monitoring, metrics dashboards, and DMARC/TLS report analysis. Also works independently of Robin MTA. |
| Robin Tools | DNS, mail authentication, reputation, and mail-service diagnostics. Run inside Admin or as a standalone workspace. |
| Robin Webmail (coming soon) | Mail, contacts, calendars, document and image attachments, application administration, and migration tools. |
Testing is still a big part of Robin. JSON5 scenarios check SMTP responses, delivery logs, and the message that arrives over IMAP. They can verify MIME content and attachment hashes, generate PDF attachments, pass captured values between checks, and reproduce delivery failures.
Robin MTA, Admin, and Tools are Apache-2.0 open-source projects.
