Apps that need a better screenshot #823

Open

Description

@saltedlolly

The App Viewer shows each app's screenshot, and Tronbyt servers use the same screenshots in their app store. Some apps don't have a screenshot, and others have one that doesn't show the app well. This issue tracks them so they can be updated over time.

If you're an app's author (or just want to help), render a new screenshot with Pixlet and open a pull request. See AGENTS.md for details:

pixlet render -z 9 apps/<appname>/<app_name>.star # 64x32: <appname>.webp
pixlet render -2 -z 9 apps/<appname>/<app_name>.star # 128x64: <appname>@2x.webp (if the app supports it)
pixlet render -w 64 -t 64 -z 9 apps/<appname>/<app_name>.star -o apps/<appname>/<appname>@64x64.webp # 64x64 (if supported)

Screenshots should be the display's own resolution (64x32, 128x64 or 64x64), with no dot-matrix effect or border drawn on: the Viewer adds those itself. Apps that need an API key or other settings can be rendered with example values (pixlet render ... key=value) so the screenshot shows real content rather than an error.

Please tick an app off once its new screenshot is merged. If you spot another app whose screenshot shows an error message or doesn't represent the app, add a comment and it can be added to the list.

No screenshot (33)

Photo or screenshot that isn't at a display's resolution (70)

These are photos of a device, or screenshots at a size that isn't a whole-number enlargement of 64x32, 128x64 or 64x64.

Screenshot with a grid or dots already drawn on (4)

Screenshot file can't be read (2)

Screenshot named so servers show the wrong file (8)

These apps have a Pixlet render, but its file name means Tronbyt servers show an older photo or enlarged image instead. Servers look for a file named after the manifest's packageName, then the .star file, then screenshot, trying .webp, .gif and .png.

  • Days to Xmas: only a @64x64.webp render; servers show screenshot.gif
  • Desk Name Tag: only a @64x64.webp render; servers show screenshot.png
  • DW Headline: only a @64x64.webp render; servers show screenshot.png
  • Movie Night: only a @64x64.webp render; servers show screenshot.png
  • Movie Quotes: only a @64x64.webp render; servers show screenshot.png
  • NHL Standings: only a @64x64.webp render; servers show screenshot.png
  • Frog Desk: frogdesk.webp is 576x288; the 64x32 render is frogdesk.gif
  • Solar Powerwall: the render solarpowerwall.webp is named after the folder, so servers find solar_powerwall.png (640x320) first

Screenshot shows an error or setup message (50)

The screenshot was rendered without the settings or API key the app needs, so it shows an error or a setup prompt instead of the app working. Apps that need an API key can be rendered with example values (pixlet render ... key=value) where the app supports it.

64x32

128x64 (2x)

64x64 (square)

Screenshot doesn't show real content (5)

These render without errors but don't show what the app looks like in use.

64x32

128x64 (2x)

64x64 (square)

No screenshot for a display size the app supports (45)

The manifest declares supports2x or supports64x64, but there's no screenshot for that size (<packageName>@2x.webp or <packageName>@64x64.webp), so the App Viewer and Tronbyt servers can't show the app at that size.

Update after checking the list more closely:

12 apps were listed by mistake. They already have a correct Pixlet screenshot that Tronbyt servers use; the App Viewer just picked a different file. The Viewer fix in #826 makes it choose screenshots the same way as servers, and I'll tick these once it merges:
Biorhythm, Fitbit Weight, I Quit, Pet Pikachu, Rain Radar, Satoshi Radio, Shabbat, Stock Data, Trambyt and WooCommerce Stats. Double Pendulum was a false alarm from my own check, and DigiByte Price has since been fixed in #818.

8 apps need adding: their screenshot files are named so that Tronbyt servers show an old photo or enlarged image instead of their Pixlet render. I've added them to the list above under a new heading:

    • Days to Xmas, Desk Name Tag, DW Headline, Movie Night, Movie Quotes, NHL Standings: only a @64x64.webp render, with a screenshot.* photo shown instead (servers also don't find the 64x64 render, as its name doesn't match)
    • Frog Desk: frogdesk.webp is 576x288; the 64x32 render is frogdesk.gif
    • Solar Powerwall: the render is named after the folder (solarpowerwall.webp), so servers find solar_powerwall.png (640x320) first

Batch 1 of the screenshot fixes is in #825.

Ticked 47 apps: the 45 fixed by #825, #827, #828, #829 and #830 (thanks for merging), plus DigiByte Price (fixed in #818) and Double Pendulum (a false alarm). The other 10 false alarms will be ticked once #826 merges.

Ticked the other 10 false alarms now that #826 has merged: Biorhythm, Fitbit Weight, I Quit, Pet Pikachu, Rain Radar, Satoshi Radio, Shabbat, Stock Data, Trambyt and WooCommerce Stats. The App Viewer will show their Pixlet renders after its next deploy.

One thing I'd like to see is that the metadata last_updated should not be set for these fixes. The apps aren't really updated in any meaningful way. I know we have an automated CI job that populates this. Not sure if a [skip ci] tag in the title will help.
