Suggestion: serve the App Viewer at apps.tronbyt.com #835
The App Viewer is currently at https://tronbyt.github.io/apps/. Since tronbyt.com is already hosted on GitHub Pages, it could be served at https://apps.tronbyt.com instead, which would be shorter, on-brand and easier to share.
What it would take
DNS: add a CNAME record for apps.tronbyt.com pointing to tronbyt.github.io.
Verify the domain (recommended): in the organisation's settings, under Pages → Verified domains, verify tronbyt.com. This stops anyone else from claiming a tronbyt.com subdomain for their own Pages site.
Deploy workflow:deploy-pages.yml publishes with force_orphan: true, which would delete the CNAME file GitHub uses to remember a custom domain on every deploy. Adding cname: apps.tronbyt.com to the peaceiris/actions-gh-pages step writes it on each deploy instead. I'm happy to open that PR.
Repository settings: under Settings → Pages, set the custom domain to apps.tronbyt.com and tick "Enforce HTTPS" once GitHub has issued the certificate (usually within an hour).
Existing links keep working
Once a custom domain is set, GitHub redirects https://tronbyt.github.io/apps/... to https://apps.tronbyt.com/..., so links already shared in READMEs, Discord and elsewhere still work. The Viewer itself uses relative links, so it works at either address.
Other benefits
Search: a site at the root of its own domain can publish a robots.txt pointing at its sitemap (App Viewer: social cards and search metadata #824 adds one), which isn't possible under /apps. The domain can also be verified in Google Search Console through DNS.
Separate origin: the Viewer would no longer share the tronbyt.github.io origin (and its browser storage) with any other tronbyt project site.
Follow-up once it's live
A small PR to update the few hard-coded tronbyt.github.io/apps URLs (the repository README and the share and canonical URLs in the Viewer's generator). This should wait until the domain works, so those URLs never point at an address that doesn't exist yet.
@tavdog Did you set up app.tronbyt.com or apps.tronbyt.com?
(Personally I think that apps.tronbyt.com would be be better. app.tronbyt.com feels like it would refer to the Tronbyt mobile app or something. Just my 2c.)
Thanks @tavdog, it's live! https://apps.tronbyt.com/ is serving the App Viewer, its certificate is approved, and old tronbyt.github.io/apps/ links redirect to it.
One last step: please tick Enforce HTTPS in this repo's Settings > Pages. At the moment the old links redirect to http://apps.tronbyt.com, and the http version doesn't upgrade to https. Once that's on, I think this can be closed.
