feat: publications, phase 2: publish to web from the app - #2345
Phase 2 of publications (docs/PUBLICATIONS.md, build order in docs/publications/IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN.md): the owner of a public drive can Publish to web the drive, or one folder of it, from the app. Follows #2344 (phase 1, publication mode), now on dev; the two ship to production together.
What the owner gets
Publish to web, with a globe, beside Share: the drive menus (desktop, phone, drives list), folder row menus and the details panel. Web only, owner of a public drive only; hidden on private drives until phase 3.
The dialog, in three steps:
What's included. Counts, and what is left out and why: hidden items, files in hidden folders, files in ghost folders, failed uploads.
The look. Title, description, display name, up to 5 keywords, a licence for everything (Creative Commons or UDL with its terms), and icon, cover and social card (upload or pick from the drive, cropped automatically). Live previews of the page header and the link preview.
Review and publish. The snapshot is chosen for you: the newest one when nothing changed after it, else a new one. One cost, paid with Turbo or AR (AR says plainly it opens in a few minutes), then "Publishing is permanent".
Progress, failure and resume. A failed publish resumes from where it stopped, reusing what was signed and posted, so nothing is paid twice.
Done. The link with Copy link, then Open page and Done.
Blocked, with the reason, while the drive syncs or hasn't been fully read, has unconfirmed uploads, or when the folder is hidden or empty.
Published to web, once published: the published view (link with Copy link, "Published • N files", earlier versions, then Update, Open page and Done). A globe marks published drives and folders. One GraphQL query at sign-in finds them on any device.
The generated social card is drawn in the app from the cover or icon, title, description and an exact file count, with ArDrive's mark, unless the owner picks one.
What a publication is
An ArFS entity (docs/ArweaveFS.md, new "Publication" section), as a drive state is. The manifest carries:
ArFS: 0.15
Entity-Type: publication
Drive-Id
a Publication-Id that every version keeps
Publication-Scope: drive or the folder ID
Publication-Version: 1
a Keyword tag per keyword
Every other file is a plain public data item with its Publication-Id: images, publication.json, index.html, and the new files.html and sitemap.xml, which are for crawlers. None is a file in the drive, and only the drive owner's publications count.
publication.json gains optional fileCount, keywords and license. The viewer shows the licence in the byline, linked to its definition.
The page's files are written by lib/publication/domain/publication_files.dart, a port of tool/publication/page.mjs. Golden files written by the tool hold the two byte for byte (node tool/publication/golden.mjs, checked by page.test.mjs and the Dart test).
Other changes outside lib/publication
The drive state uploader returns the signed artifact's tags, which publication.json copies (GraphQL lags a fresh snapshot).
AppConfig.publicationViewer: the release a publication runs. It is a manifest ID, or an ArNS name read from the gateway's x-arns-resolved-id. It is ardrive (production) in every flavour.
image becomes a direct dependency (already resolved, 4.2.0).
the publisher: upload order, ids wired into index.html and the manifest, resume without paying twice, the AR bundle, reuse of the snapshot and earlier images;
the cubit: every block, reuse versus a new snapshot, publish, retry, update prefill;
the summary against a fixture drive, version grouping and ordering, and image sizes and budgets.
A drive published with Turbo after a forced Turbo failure and Try again.
An update that reused the snapshot and images.
An edit of the look (before Update and Edit look became one).
Two folders with AR, through the harness's fake gateway (nothing spent).
Every blocked state; image errors; a small WebP; choosing from the drive.
A second, clean profile finding the publications at sign-in, before any sync.
Phone layouts.
The published pages, opened in a clean browser: only the gateway contacted; head tags, files.html, sitemap.xml, publication.json and the generated card checked.
An independent code review of the whole diff found 1 critical, 5 major and 7 minor issues. All 13 are fixed in 0f87b0fd8, with tests, and the changed flows were re-run in the browser.
Critical: an AR publish whose bundle header was accepted but whose data didn't finish was reported done on Try again. It is now finished by sending the same transaction again.
A snapshot that ended the same way was bought twice on Try again. It is now resumed too.
Try again after a pricing failure could publish a look the owner had since changed.
An update replaced the owner's own social card, dropped a UDL licence's terms, and dropped images it couldn't read back.
Snapshot reuse now also requires the snapshot to be in a block and to match the entity count this device holds.
A folder inside a hidden folder is now blocked.
A discovery failure now says so instead of starting a second publication.
After a failure, Back keeps the work done so far, to add credits or switch to AR.
The browser run found 6 bugs, all fixed in 30db03d76:
buttons clipped their labels and filled the row;
the menu label didn't update after a publish;
the drive image picker threw on short names;
"·" drew as a full stop in the app's font;
the step label;
the AR done heading.
Try it (release nF0B1Aszt7XSUwmA9LkIP3yxnY54Ep1og7fDcRw7zTo, built from this branch), three versions of one publication:
After a review of the UI against ArDrive's own patterns (6b3c39ba8, 9d52fff9d). Shared problems were fixed in the design system in #2346 (merged), which applies everywhere. This branch is up to date with dev, and the review step drops useOptionCards, which #2346 removed.
Done and published views: the link in sharing's own read-only field with Copy link. Open page and Done are the actions, so there's one primary button, not two.
One Update in place of Update and Edit look. An update opens on the look, filled in, and Next keeps it.
Earlier versions open from a link.
Review: the payment cards uploads use. The cost appears once; it used to appear three times.
Step 2: a heading ("How it looks"). The form scrolls on its own and the previews stay in view.
Look and feel: the dialogs' own secondary buttons; outlined keyword chips; Remove as a link; "License", as the rest of the app spells it.
Failure: "Back to review", and plainer words for what Try again does.
Screenshots, before and after, desktop and phone: "Design pass" on the page linked below. Tests: 3,993 passed, analyzer clean.
Test-wallet spend (Turbo credits)
0.0690 in total:
the release, 0.0576;
four publishes:
0.0043 for the first (new snapshot and images);
0.0028 for each of two updates;
0.0015 for an update after the review fixes, where the earlier card was reused too.
Before release
Publishing from staging needs a release built with publications.publicationViewer is ardrive, the production release, and until this ships, production has no publication mode, so a page published from staging today opens a release that can't show it. For staging tests, point the stored config's publicationViewer at a test release.
The Firebase deploy step fails with a 403 on the CI service account (Service Usage Consumer). That also breaks production's live Firebase deploy.
Not in this PR
Private publications (phase 3) and names (phase 4).
A publication is an ArFS entity, as a drive state is: the manifest carries
ArFS, Entity-Type: publication, Drive-Id, a Publication-Id every version
keeps, Publication-Scope (drive or a folder id) and Publication-Version.
The files it adds are plain public data items with its Publication-Id,
never entities and never in the drive. Versions share an id and a scope;
only the drive owner's count, as for drive states.

- lib/publication/domain/publication_files.dart ports tool/publication/
page.mjs: publication.json, the page's index.html, the manifest, and the
manifest's ArFS entity tags (EntityTag/EntityTypeTag gain the publication
names)
- both gain files.html (every file as a gateway link, folders nested, at
most 5,000) and sitemap.xml, linked from index.html for crawlers that run
no script, and publication.json's optional keywords and licence
- the tool uploads with the entity tags and the app's application tags, and
takes --publication-id to publish a new version
- golden files: tool/publication/golden.mjs writes the tool's output for
fixed inputs, page.test.mjs checks they are current and the dart test
checks the app writes the same bytes; .gitattributes keeps their line
endings

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- the browser decodes a picked picture (PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, up to 20 MB);
a canvas crops it to the middle: icons as 32, 180 and 512 px PNGs, the
cover (1600 x 400) and an owner's own card (1200 x 630) as JPEGs aiming
under 100 KiB
- the generated card is painted from the title, description, file count,
cover or icon (background tinted from the icon's colour) and ArDrive's
mark; the same painter draws the dialog's preview
- image becomes a direct dependency (it was already resolved, 4.2.0)

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- PublicationRepository finds a drive's publications by GraphQL (Entity-Type
publication, the owner, Drive-Id), groups versions by Publication-Id and
keeps one scope per publication; remembers what this session published,
since GraphQL lags; reads a version back (manifest, publication.json) and
resolves the release (a manifest ID, or an ArNS name through the gateway's
x-arns-resolved-id)
- PublicationUploader signs every file first, so ids are known, then posts
them to Turbo one by one, or as one AR bundle
- PublicationPublisher: a new snapshot when needed, images, publication.json,
index.html (og:image on the selected gateway), files.html, sitemap.xml,
the manifest last with the entity and Keyword tags, then a warm-up; a
failed publish resumes with the same job and pays for nothing twice
- PublicationContents loads from a scope and summarises it: files, folders,
size, and what is left out (hidden, in hidden or ghost folders, pending,
failed); listedFiles() for files.html
- the drive state uploader returns the artifact's signed tags, which
publication.json copies
- config: publicationViewer, the release a publication runs ('ardrive')

- publication.json gains optional fileCount (what it lists, for its owner's
published view) and license (name, shortName, definitionTxId, and a UDL's
parameters); tool and app write both, the golden holds them equal
- the viewer reads them; the byline ends with the licence's short name,
linked to its definition on the gateway

- "Publish to web" beside Share in the drive menus (desktop, phone, drives
list), folder row menus and the details panel, for the owner of a public
drive on the web; "Published to web" once published, which opens the
published view: the link with Copy and Open, "Published <date> · N
files", Update, Edit look, earlier versions
- the dialog: what's included (counts, what is left out and why), the look
(title, description, display name, keywords, a licence for everything,
icon, cover and social card from an upload or the drive, live previews of
the page header and the generated card), review (snapshot reused when
nothing changed since it, else new; one cost; Turbo or AR; "Publishing is
permanent"), progress, done, and try again without paying twice
- blocked, with the reason, while the drive syncs or was not fully read,
with unconfirmed uploads, for a hidden folder or nothing to show
- one GraphQL query at sign-in finds every publication the wallet made, so
published drives and folders carry a globe ("Published to web")
- the display name is offered again from the owner's last publication
- discovery queries the owner's publications at once (OwnerPublications)
rather than drive by drive

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- buttons in the dialogs were a fixed 36-40 px, clipping their labels, and
as wide as the row; they now fit their label (publishButton), and an
earlier version's Open no longer squeezes its date to one letter a line
- the menus said "Publish to web" after a publish until the page rebuilt;
PublishToWebMenuItem follows PublicationsCubit
- the drive image picker threw on file names under 36 characters
(truncateString), drawing a grey box in place of the list; names now
ellipsize, the picker is the standard modal, and images without a
recorded content type are found by their extension
- "·" drew as a full stop in Wavehaus; separators are "•", as the byline's
- "Step 1 of 3" instead of "1 / 3"; AR's done heading is "Your page is on
its way"; earlier versions show the time, two can share a day

- PUBLICATIONS.md: phases 1 and 2 built; decisions 10 (update, snapshot
chosen for the owner) and 12 (an ArFS entity, why "publication"); the
page's files gain files.html and sitemap.xml; publication.json's
fileCount, keywords and license; og:image on the selected gateway; the
owner's UX as built (entry points, blocks, the three steps, progress,
failure, done, published view, globe) and the entity's tags
- IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN.md: phase 2 as built, its tests and end-to-end run
- ArweaveFS.md: the optional Keyword tags

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
Money and permanence:
- an AR bundle whose header was accepted and a chunk failed is finished on
Try again by sending the same transaction again (208 for the header,
idempotent chunks), not skipped as done nor signed and paid anew
- a new snapshot that ended uncertain is resumed the same way: the drive
state uploader's uncertain result carries a resume and the signed tags
- after a failure, Back returns to the review with everything done kept;
switching to AR there bundles only what Turbo had not taken
(PublicationJob.withMethod)
- review() drops the priced job, so a pricing failure after an edit cannot
publish the earlier look on Try again
- any unexpected error ends on the failed screen, never on a progress
screen with no way out
Updates change only what the owner changed:
- the owner's own social card is kept; a generated one is kept while
nothing it shows changes (publication.json marks it,
generatedSocialCard, tool and app alike), and the icon's tint is restored
- a UDL licence keeps its terms (PublicationLicense parses params)
- an earlier image that cannot be read back is still published as it was
Correctness:
- a reused snapshot must be in a block and count what this device holds
- a folder inside a hidden folder is blocked like a hidden one
- a discovery failure says so instead of starting a second publication
- what this session published is tied to the wallet that published it
- no emits after the dialog closes

This change adds public ArFS publication workflows for drives and folders. It defines publication data and page formats, builds and uploads publication artifacts, discovers versions, and adds publishing, update, and published-view UI.
Changes: Publish drives and folders to the web
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Publication contract and web artifacts docs/ArweaveFS.md, docs/PUBLICATIONS.md, lib/publication/domain/publication_config.dart, lib/publication/domain/publication_files.dart, packages/ardrive_utils/lib/src/entity_tag.dart, tool/publication/*, test/publication/fixtures/golden/*
Publication tags and metadata now define an ArFS publication entity. Page builders generate publication JSON, index and files pages, a sitemap, and a manifest. Golden fixtures and tests check generated output. Viewer configuration is added to app configuration and environment files.
The repository reads and groups owner publications and their content. Scope loading and summaries identify listed files and excluded items. PublicationsCubit tracks the signed-in owner’s publications, and app providers supply the repository and cubit.
Image processing generates icons, banners, and social cards. The Look step edits publication metadata, keywords, licences, and images, with live previews. Publication configuration supports file counts and licences, which also appear in the publication byline.
The publisher generates and signs publication items, then uploads them individually through Turbo or as an Arweave bundle. Jobs retain completed work for retries and upload-method changes. Drive-state upload results include tags and can resume uncertain L1 uploads.
Publishing entry points and published view lib/publication/presentation/publish/publish_dialog.dart, lib/publication/presentation/publish/published_view.dart, lib/publication/presentation/publish_to_web.dart, lib/components/details_panel.dart, lib/drives_list/presentation/*, lib/pages/drive_detail/*, lib/l10n/app_en.arb
Drive and folder menus expose publishing actions and publication marks. The dialog displays eligibility, included content, appearance, pricing, progress, failure, and completion states. The published view shows the latest link and earlier versions. English localization and publishing workflow tests are added.

If a publish fails after part of the work was paid for, going back and re-pricing can charge the owner again or create a duplicate permanent publication. That should be fixed before merge. The remaining issues are narrow edge cases with safe fallbacks.

- The link sits in the read-only field and Copy link that sharing uses;
Open page and Done are the dialog's actions, so the done and published
views have one primary button, not two.
- One Update in place of Update and Edit look: an update opens on the
look, filled in from the published page, where Next keeps it.
- Earlier versions open from a link, not a button per row.
- The review uses the payment cards uploads use and drops its own cost
row, which said the cost a third time.
- Step 2 has a heading like the other steps ("How it looks"); on a wide
screen the form scrolls on its own and the previews stay in view.
- Image buttons are the dialogs' secondary button.
- License, as the rest of the app spells it.
- Failure: "Back to review", and plainer words for what Try again does.

- Priced again after a failure (Back to review, Back to the look, Next),
the job was rebuilt from scratch: a sent snapshot was bought again, a
