feat: publications, phase 1: publication mode for public drives and folders - #2344
Phase 1 of publications (docs/PUBLICATIONS.md, build order in docs/publications/IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN.md): ArDrive in a read-only publication mode. A page manifest that pins a release and adds publication.json, its own index.html and a drive state snapshot opens one public drive, or one folder of it, under the owner's title, icon and cover. There is no sync, no account, no analytics and no Turbo, and it makes no request outside the gateway serving it.
The feature was called library pages until 3d90b2c34, which renames it to publications everywhere ("page" collided with deploy, which can make any page, site or app); the settings file is now publication.json and the switch <meta name="ardrive-publication">. Visitors never see the word: errors say "This page can't be opened".
Publishing from the app is phase 2. Until then, tool/publication/build_test_page.mjs builds a page by hand. It is also the reference phase 2's publisher must match.
Try it (release xy9uNquTZgl0YsbpS3Mk9cDraIxSPdzit1DI0Y8gcvg, built from this branch after the rename):
Phase 1 changes nothing for anyone using the app: publication mode is on only when the page carries <meta name="ardrive-publication">. Two fixes found along the way do change the app, and both are listed below.
How a page opens
PublicationMode.detect reads the meta tag before any service starts (lib/main.dart). In publication mode:
the app neither reads nor writes stored config;
the database is an in-memory SQLite, with no worker and no Web Lock;
analytics, HTML auto-reload and the Solana RPC re-init are off.
PublicationLoaderCubit reads publication.json, then the snapshot (with progress), seeds the drive row and imports with the existing DriveStateImporter. Failures map to the design's four error screens.
The router has two outcomes: the loading and error screens, then the explorer at the scope's root. App routes (/sign-in, /drives/...), deep links outside the scope, and links to hidden or ghost folders all land on the root.
Nothing syncs: SyncCubit returns early in publication mode.
Data comes only from the gateway serving the page:
gateway detection also tries the page's own host;
the gateway fallback stays on that gateway (it used to call Solana RPC for the gateway list on a folder download);
Flutter's fallback fonts load from the page through a fetch rewrite in index.html. The production Arweave deploy adds the engine's 144 font files, checksum-pinned (tool/fetch_fallback_fonts.sh);
Firefox and Safari save downloads through StreamSaver's helper page on the page's own gateway, not arweave.net;
a Markdown note's images load only from the page's host or gateway (publicationMayFetch), and the dev tools never open.
What a visitor sees
As familiar as a shared folder on Google Drive or Dropbox, with nothing said twice (agreed with Phil on 2026-10-23 after reviewing the first build):
Top bar: the publication's icon, search scoped to the publication, the theme toggle, and one quiet "Made with ArDrive" button (ArDrive's mark on a phone). There is no sidebar, drawer, footer or "Open in ArDrive".
Header at the root: the cover as a banner with nothing printed on it, then the title with Download and Copy link beside it, then "By • N files • size • published ", then the description. The owner is the name they chose (ownerName) or their address shortened; hover shows the whole address and a click copies it. As the list scrolls, the header folds to its title and actions, so the list gets the window; at the top it unfolds.
Subfolders: the breadcrumb row leads, and its root crumb is the title.
Hidden items: never shown, searched, linked to or zipped. Neither are ghost folders, failed or pending uploads, or anything outside a folder publication's folder (PublicationContents).
Actions: Download, Download folder, Preview, More info, and Copy link, which copies the publication's own link to the folder or file. A zip download (the whole publication, a folder or the selected rows) first says "Download 79 files?", with the size and the zip's name; a single file downloads on one click. Everything that writes is gone: Share, rename, move, hide, license, pin, snapshot, sync, attach, and Edit note.
The list: on a single page it ends with its count ("1-14 of 14") and a margin, and the column headings have a hairline under them.
Fixes that also change the app
The phone folder bar no longer cuts a long drive or folder name through its second line; it uses one line with an ellipsis.
An image without a thumbnail, as every CLI upload is, no longer asks the gateway for raw/null before showing its icon.
How it was tested
Unit and widget tests: the full suite (3,947 passed, 5 skipped), packages/ardrive_ui (109 passed) and flutter analyze lib test (no issues). The new tests are under test/publication/, plus the router, sync, gateway-fallback and explorer cases.
Every flow, by hand, against the app: I built a public test drive for this. It has every preview type, three folder levels, an empty folder, 60 files in one folder, long and Unicode names, and hidden files and folders, one inside the folder published as the folder publication. I walked every flow on a drive publication and a folder publication, with and without an icon and cover, plus a long title and all four error screens. I did this on desktop, phone and tablet, in light and dark, beside the plain app at the same sizes. That pass found the defects fixed in the "every surface checked" and "loading screen" commits, and the layout review led to the header, the download step and the end of the list. A final pass checked every state of the new layout on desktop, phone and tablet, light and dark, plus keyboard and screen-reader names.
An independent code review of the whole diff found no leak of hidden or out-of-scope items, no write path and no unintended app change. Its other findings are fixed in 8ef94091e: UTF-8 for publication.json (non-ASCII titles were garbled), four requests outside the allowed hosts, the address bar during loading, the header fold's reset, a double download confirm, empty-looking folders, and the byline without a date.
Firefox: a download completes, with the helper page served by the page's own gateway.
Live on turbo-gateway.com (the two pages above):
A downloaded file and the whole-publication zip (79 files) are byte-identical to the originals, and the folder publication's zip holds only its folder.
Image, video, audio and PDF previews work; video and audio play.
Search is scoped, a copied link reopens with its file selected, and deep links outside the scope land on the root.
Title, description, theme colour, favicon, touch icon and Open Graph tags are correct, and og:image resolves.
Every request went to turbo-gateway.com or its per-page subdomains, nowhere else.
Measured (design facts table): first visit 8.95 MB, files on screen 4.0 to 4.3 s on a desktop connection, 50.4 s on Lighthouse's phone profile (the bundle's download), and a 569-entity snapshot imported in 0.20 s.
Test-wallet spend (Turbo credits)
About 1.06 credits in total:
release uploads, about 1.02: one first upload with the fallback fonts at 0.568, then incremental rebuilds at about 0.056 each (the last, after the rename, 0.0566);
test pages, about 0.033;
the test drive and its snapshot, 0.0095.
Small uploads are no longer free: a page's three files cost about 0.0014 credits, plus its images.
Not in this PR
Publishing from the app, republishing and the management section (phase 2), private publications (phase 3), names (phase 4).
The large-drive phone test from the plan. Only nine drive state snapshots exist on the network, the largest public one 569 entities, so a large one has to be made first.
A browser test for the font fetch rewrite. It was checked by hand: every font loads from the page.
For review
Publishing (phase 2) gains two fields from this review: a display name for the byline, and a social card the publish generates when the owner gives none (og:image on https://ardrive.net/<card-tx>). Both are in the design.
Copy link copies the address the browser is on. That is the gateway's per-page subdomain (https://<long-code>.turbo-gateway.com/<id>/#/...). The link works, but it is longer than https://turbo-gateway.com/<id>/.
Visitors in the normal app see "Edit note". A visitor who does not own the drive gets it on a Markdown preview. That is an existing bug; this PR removes it only on publications.
Production deploys download the fallback fonts. The Arweave deploy now fetches them from fonts.gstatic.com at build time and fails if any is missing or changed. Firebase has deployed by then, so app.ardrive.io still ships. Agreed on 2026-10-23.
flutter 3.19.6 hard-codes fonts.gstatic.com for roboto and its 143 noto
fallback fonts, with no fontFallbackBaseUrl, but fetches them through
window.fetch. phil chose (2026-10-22) to self-host all 144 files in the
arweave bundle and point the engine at them from index.html in library
mode, so a library page makes no third-party request.

- LibraryMode reads the page's <meta name="ardrive-library"> once; only
a plain relative path switches it on, so the settings always come from
the page's own manifest
- LibraryConfig parses library.json strictly: arfs ids, 43-character
arweave ids, paths inside the page, cipher tags required on a private
library and refused on a public one, and a version newer than this
build reported as its own error (the "needs a newer ArDrive" screen)
- the owner's title and description are kept as plain text

when the page carries <meta name="ardrive-library">, main() switches the
services that would otherwise reach beyond the page's host, keep state,
or touch the visitor's own ardrive data:
- config: the flavor asset only, never the stored config, with file
data from the ar.io gateway serving the page (detected on every load,
not cached) and auto-sync off; dev-tools saves are no-ops
- database: Database.forLibraryPage(), sqlite in memory with webSqlite
set for the drive state importer; no web lock, worker, indexeddb or
sql.js migration
- analytics: PlausibleEventTracker.disabled, checked on the one send path
- no Turbo upload service (it asks upload.ardrive.io for limits at
construction), no Solana re-init, no 12-hour page reload
- ProfileCubit no longer forgets "visitor drives" in library mode, which
would delete the imported library
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- LibrarySource reads library.json and the snapshot beside the page,
streaming the snapshot with progress
- LibraryLoaderCubit: settings, then (private) waiting for a key, then
seeding the drive row and root placeholder (DriveDao.writeLibraryDrive,
lastUpdated at the epoch so the snapshot's drive metadata wins), then
the snapshot, then the existing DriveStateImporter with the owner and
tags library.json names; no graphql
- the design's four failures: settings unreadable, snapshot unavailable
(retry), snapshot rejected (including a folder library whose folder
the snapshot lacks), needs a newer viewer
- tests: every transition, and the public-gzip golden fixture loaded end
to end into an in-memory database, requesting only the page's two
files

a library page is exactly its snapshot. in library mode SyncCubit starts
idle, creates no sync or arconnect streams and no focus listeners, and
every entry point returns at once: startSync, startSyncForDrive,
syncMetadataOnly, checkForUnreadChanges, arconnectSync,
watchForPendingConfirmations and the focus restart. a test asserts the
sync repository is never touched.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- library routes: #/folders/<id>?file=<id> opens a folder and picks out
a file; every other route (sign-in, drives list, other drives, shared
files, /view) is the library's root, and the address bar shows / or
/folders/<id>
- AppRouterDelegate in library mode provides the LibraryLoaderCubit,
shows LibraryLoaderPage until the library is imported, then the
existing anonymous explorer at the scope root; a deep link is honoured
only when isInLibraryScope says its folder is in the library (bounded
walk up the parents, so a folder library's link cannot be edited to
open another folder of the drive)
- no sign-in redirect and no attach prompt in library mode
- LibraryLoaderPage: the design's loading screen (icon, title, progress
with sizes when known) and four error screens; a private library shows
"needs a newer ArDrive" until phase 3
- strings in app_en.arb

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- LibrarySideBar: icon, title, description, published date, "Open in
ArDrive" (the drive in the app's visitor flow) and "Made with ArDrive",
with the collapse control; a drawer on a phone
- top bar and mobile app bar: the theme toggle instead of the hide
toggle, sync indicator and profile card; the phone bar shows the
library's icon and title
- search says "Search this library…"
- no mobile New button and no private drive migration banner
- libraryConfigOf, libraryLink and openInArDriveUrl helpers

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- DriveDetailCubit filters folder contents in library mode, where they
become items, so the table, counts, image navigation and selection
agree: no hidden items (whatever stored preferences say), no ghost
folders, no failed or pending uploads
- isInLibraryScope refuses hidden folders below the published one, so a
link cannot open a hidden folder or anything inside it
- every Share action becomes Copy link (the library's own link to the
folder, or to a file in its folder); Sync, Full resync and Export are
gone from the row, drive and details panel menus; owner actions were
already gated on a signed-in owner

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- breadcrumbs start at the folder a library was published at, and the
root crumb is the library's title (desktop and phone); DriveDetailCubit
takes the scope root, and "the root" (openFolder with no id, the
phone's up button) is that folder, never the drive's root above it
- LibraryCoverBand on the library's root only: the cover image cropped
to fill (200 px desktop, 120 px phone) with a scrim, the title and
"N files · size · published <date>"; without a cover, the title line
- computeLibraryStats counts what the library shows (scope, not hidden,
not under a hidden folder) once after the import, carried in
LibraryReady

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- LibrarySearchRepository: files and folders the library shows, never the
drive or the published folder; reads past matches outside a folder
library a page at a time, so they do not crowd out those inside
- LibraryFolders: the in-memory scope walk, shared with the cover band's
counts, and now leaving out ghost folders as the explorer does
- SearchScope uses it on a library page

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- tool/fetch_fallback_fonts.sh: downloads Flutter 3.19.6's 144 fallback
fonts into build/web/fonts/gstatic/, checked against the pinned list in
tool/fallback_fonts.sha256; --pin rewrites the list from an engine
- web/index.html: on a library page, window.fetch sends
fonts.gstatic.com/s/ requests to fonts/gstatic/ on the page's host
- production and staging-arweave workflows add the fonts before the
Arweave upload only; production deploys incrementally so they are paid
for once per Flutter version

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- LibraryContents (was LibraryFolders) also reads the drive's files through
the explorer's latest-revision query, so failed and pending uploads are
left out of the cover band's count and of search, as they are of the list
- search on a library page says "Nothing in this library matches" and its
full results speak of files and folders, not drives

A result named where it is by its drive's name, then its folder, so a
folder library showed the name of the drive above it. Results now name
the library's title, and none of the folder the owner published.

tool/library_page/build_test_page.mjs writes library.json, the page's
index.html (head written in, escaped) and the page manifest from a
release manifest, a drive state artifact and a title; with --upload it
uploads them with Turbo from the test wallet, refusing anything over the
free size, and prints the page link. page.mjs holds the deterministic
builders the app's publisher must match in phase 2, with node tests.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- the phone's bottom bar, empty on a library page, was an empty Container,
which fills the height it is given and left the file list none
- Open in ArDrive opens a folder library at its folder, not the drive
- the cover band's title lines start at the left on a phone too, and its
summary separates with bullets, as the file rows do

- DRIVE_STATE_ARTIFACT.md §2.7: producers always compress; library pages
read the whole snapshot, so there is no threshold
- LIBRARY_PAGES.md: the page manifest is about 82 KB with the fonts, and a
page's small files are no longer free
- the test page tool says what its uploads cost

From an independent review of phase 1. Scope was applied where items
become rows, but code that reads the drive itself went around it:
- downloads (row, toolbar, multi-select, drive menu) prune every folder
tree through LibraryContents, set when the library is ready; a drive
download is the library, named by its title; nothing downloads before
the library is open
- the folder info panel counts the pruned tree
- the drive's More info is gone from library pages: it named the drive,
listed its past names and asked GraphQL for its snapshots
- Copy link on a drive menu copies the library's own link, never the id of
a drive root outside a folder library
- a deep link to a ghost folder lands on the root, as search and the
counts already treated it
- any unexpected loading error (database, sqlite3.wasm, importer) ends on
the retryable screen instead of loading for ever
- the window keeps the page's own title instead of "ArDrive"
- a library page served from a gateway's own host, not a sandbox
subdomain, detects that gateway instead of probing its parent domain

DataGatewayFallback built its client list from the ar.io gateway registry,
read over Solana RPC (the QuikNode endpoint and api.mainnet-beta.solana.com),
and added arweave.net. A folder download on a live library page reached
both RPC hosts. On a library page the list is the serving gateway alone.

The app is not scoped to a folder, so "Open in ArDrive" let a visitor of
a folder library walk up to the rest of a drive its owner published only
part of. Drive libraries keep the link; folder libraries show only "Made
with ArDrive".

…ived
The web http client hands over a body only once it is complete, so the
loading screen never knew the snapshot's size and "Loading files... N of
M" could not show. In the browser the snapshot now downloads through
the request's own progress events. A count past a compressed total
shows the unsized line instead.

Found by walking every flow of a drive and a folder library, desktop,
phone and tablet, light and dark, beside the app at the same sizes:
- the fallback icon was the white "ardrive" wordmark squeezed into a
square, nearly invisible; it is ArDrive's mark
- the title band sat 4 to 8 px off the breadcrumbs beneath it; it lines
up on desktop and phone, with or without a cover
- a note's preview offered "Edit note", which led into the upload flow;
a library page is read-only
- the phone folder bar cut a long name through its second line; it is
one line with an ellipsis, in the app too
- the icon and cover were blank slots while they loaded; they hold a
plain placeholder, and until library.json is read the loading screen
shows only its background ("Opening library..." could no longer show)
- an image without a thumbnail, as every CLI upload is, asked the
gateway for raw/null before showing its icon; it no longer asks

Agreed with Phil after reviewing the first build: as familiar as a
shared folder on Google Drive or Dropbox, and nothing said twice.
- no sidebar or drawer; the library's icon leads the top bar, and its
right side holds the theme toggle and one quiet "Made with ArDrive"
button (ArDrive's mark on a phone), the only place the page names
ArDrive. "Open in ArDrive" is gone: a visitor has no use for it
- at the root a header replaces the cover band and the breadcrumb row:
the cover as a banner with nothing printed on it, the title with
Download and Copy link beside it, "By <owner> • N files • size •
published <date>", and the description. Download takes the selected
rows when there are any, and says so
- the owner is the name they chose (library.json `ownerName`, the test
tool's --owner-name) or their address shortened; the full address is
the tooltip and a click copies it
- the header folds to its title and actions while the list beneath is
scrolled, so the list has the window, and unfolds at its top; the
wheel over the header does both
- a hairline under the table's column headings on library pages, so
rows pass beneath an edge instead of looking cut off
- the design doc records the frame, the generated social card on
ardrive.net, and the social undername once names arrive

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015ci1GgKQDUyRt4PcQfdEZy
- the table ends with its range ("1-14 of 14") when there is one page,
and a margin under it, so the list ends where its card visibly does
instead of on the window's edge (library pages only)
- a zip download on a library page (the whole library, a folder or the
selected rows) first says what it will be: "Download 79 files?",
its size and the zip's name, with Cancel and Download, and that a
download over 100 MiB takes a while. A single file still downloads
on one click. The app's own downloads are unchanged

An independent read-only review of the phase 1 diff found no leak of
hidden or out-of-scope items, no write path and no unintended change to
the app. It found these, each fixed and checked in the browser:
- library.json was decoded as Latin-1 (gateways send it without a
charset), so "Phil’s Archive", accents, emoji or CJK came out
garbled in the header, search and zip names; it is read as UTF-8
- requests outside the page's host and gateway:
- an image a Markdown note links to elsewhere was fetched; it shows
as its alt text (libraryMayFetch)
- Firefox and Safari save downloads through StreamSaver, whose helper
page the app names on arweave.net; a library page points it at the
same transaction on its own gateway (download completes in Firefox,
helper served from turbo-gateway.com)
- the details panel fetched a license missing from the snapshot with
GraphQL; a library page shows what its snapshot has
- gateway detection probed a top-level domain (`https://com/...`)
- the dev tools (gateway and RPC switches, health checks) opened on a
keyboard shortcut for any visitor
- while loading, the address bar showed `#/` over a deep link and left
it in the history, so Back went to the root; it keeps the link
- the header's fold could be read before a new folder reset it, and on
a touch screen a list that fits once folded left it folded for good;
it resets first, and a swipe on the header folds and unfolds it
- a second Download tap in the confirm step could start a second
download over the same zip; the step confirms once
- a folder holding only hidden items showed an empty table, not "This
folder is empty"
- a library without a publish date lost its file count from the byline

Walkthrough
This pull request adds publication mode for loading and browsing scoped drive snapshots. It adds publication-specific routing, presentation, search, and downloads, plus tooling to generate publication pages and deploy fallback fonts.
Changes: Publications
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Publication contracts and scope lib/publication/domain/*, lib/publication/data/publication_search_repository.dart, lib/publication/domain/publication_stats.dart, test/publication/domain/*, test/publication/data/publication_search_repository_test.dart
Publication metadata parsing, scope checks, visible-content filtering, and statistics are added with corresponding tests.
Startup detects publication mode, initializes publication-specific services and an in-memory database, then loads settings and imports snapshot data with progress and failure states.
Publication routing and scope resolution lib/pages/app_route_information_parser.dart, lib/pages/app_route_path.dart, lib/pages/app_router_delegate.dart, test/pages/publication_routes_test.dart
Routes carry publication folder and file IDs. The router resolves requested folders against publication scope and opens the scoped drive anonymously.
Publication mode filters displayed content and updates navigation, header, menus, search, and read-only actions. Sync and development tools are disabled in publication mode.
Publication downloads include only shown content and use the publication title. The ZIP flow can display count and size and require confirmation before downloading.
Publication page generation and upload tooling are added. Deployment workflows fetch pinned fallback fonts, and publication pages redirect matching font requests to local files. Publication and artifact documentation is updated.

Publication links and scoped file selection do not show the identified bypasses. Explicitly limit deployment token permissions to reduce exposure from the new action; this is a bounded issue rather than a demonstrated deployment failure.

Explanation
The title "feat: publications, phase 1: publication mode for public drives and folders" matches the main change in the changeset. The objectives describe a read-only publication mode for one public drive or folder, and the summaries show that mode across routing, loading, sync, download, and UI files. The title uses the renamed term "publication" from the commit history, which matches the files in the changeset. The title does not mention the font self-hosting or the Arweave workflow changes, but those are secondary to the main change.

- Around line 546-549: Update section 2.7 so it no longer defines a
random-access threshold or says producers choose encoding per artifact. Describe
compressed encoding as the producer’s consistent output and identity encoding as
reader-supported but not producer-written, keeping the section’s existing
relevant details aligned with the closing paragraph.

only when they have no authority; scheme-relative URLs must continue through the
host check, while non-HTTP(S) schemes remain rejected. Add the scheme-relative
URL assertion to the “and from nowhere else” test.

mode so unauthenticated visitors do not trigger thumbnail uploads; preserve the
existing upload behavior outside library mode. Locate the handler in the drive
explorer item tile near the FileDataTableItem and FileTypeHelper image checks.

- a scheme-relative url (`//host/x`) in a note goes through the host check
instead of passing as relative
- a library visitor's tap on an image icon no longer tries to make a
thumbnail, which needs a signed-in uploader
- DRIVE_STATE_ARTIFACT.md 2.7 no longer describes a random-access
threshold: producers always compress, readers accept both

Phil chose "publication" for the feature: "page" collides with deploy,
which can make any page, site or app. Renamed everywhere, before anything
ships, because publication.json and the meta tag become public API once a
release carries them:
- lib/library -> lib/publication, test/library -> test/publication, every
library_* file -> publication_*, LibraryMode -> PublicationMode and every
Library* name with it, the l10n keys
- the page's switch is <meta name="ardrive-publication"> and its settings
file publication.json
- tool/library_page -> tool/publication; docs/LIBRARY_PAGES.md ->
docs/PUBLICATIONS.md, docs/library-pages -> docs/publications
- visitors never see the word: "This page can't be opened", "Search
files...", "Nothing here matches"
- Dart's own "library" (dart.library.html, library directives, lint names)
is untouched

The rename left the conditional import on its old name; tests load the stub,
so only the web compile saw it.

production.yaml has no permissions: block, and the new Arweave deployment action runs in a job that holds deployment secrets. Add an explicit permissions block with only the scopes required by checkout and the live Firebase deployment.

CodeRabbit (outside the diff): production.yaml had no permissions block
while its job holds deployment secrets. Every job that runs only checks
out the code; the Firebase action uses the token only on pull requests,
and the Arweave deploy signs with its own key.

@coderabbitai The outside-diff comment on .github/workflows/production.yaml (least-privilege permissions) is fixed in c08b275: the workflow now declares permissions: contents: read. Every job that runs only checks out the code. The Firebase action uses repoToken only on pull requests, which this workflow never runs on, and the Arweave deploy signs with its own key. The iOS and Android jobs are disabled (if: false).
